I have a Montauk 170 and I would like to add two manual downriggers. I have rails so I would have to add them behind the rail, on a rail mount or remove part of the rail. Any experience or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Harvey

I have agonized over this same question and it seems there only two options with a Montauk. Either use a rail mount or put a board across the rails. and mount to the board. I have read several posts from people who have used both methods and say that is satisfactory but I have found no comment from anyone who has had the downrigger weight catch on the bottom. I would think that would cause things to break. I have been using Dipsy Divers for trolling at depths up to 100 feet to good effect and don't have to worry about any damage to my boat.
I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport. |

I have a 1982 Sport 15 with a pair of Scotty manual downriggers . I mounted them on the Scotty Rail Mounts which are quite strong. I imagine these would work well on your boat too.

I purchased the scotty rail mount and have a small problem . WHen i am fishing and have the weight of the ball over the side all is well. However when there is no weight over the side the down rigger wants to fall in . Plenty of support for fishing but not so much when you remove the ball. I have the scotty electric down riggers . thanks BG

Try shortening your wooden supports a wee bit so the downrigger has a slight outward cant. This will move the center of gravity of the downrigger outboard and help keep it form rotating into the boat.

Scotty now has a "Stanchion Mount" that looks more stable than the rail mount with the wood piece.
Has anybody tried them?
Thanks
Harvey

I used a combination of teak and Scotty downrigger mounts.

If interested, I can provide better pictures and details.

The rail mount that I have has 4 bolts which mount on a horizontal and vertical rail, the plates and bolts go thru both rails. This prevents it from turning or moving.
