I have read a bunch about using Lees verticals in the teak RPS. Does anyone have experience in using Lees vertical rod holders in the fiberglass RPS of the mid 1990's Montauks?
The dimensions seem very tight and it looks like there may be over lap on the cushion.

Lee's makes two different sizes in the verticals, I have and use the smaller ones (I have 6 older ones on my 16'7" Whaler right now they are Chrome over Brass). Older Lee's (usually have the Miami Logo on the rod holder) are chrome over brass, the other style are stainless. Depending on where you want to mount them you can get the newer ones with closed bottoms, they have a 3/8 female thread to put a drain and hose to direct the water. They also make backplates for the rod holder as well, this gives your bite on the install greater. I build a custom fiberglass console for my Whaler and this is where the rods holders are mounted, I did make the glass thicker where I was mounting them but I knew I was mounting the rod holders there...I have them mounted in my larger boat as well...If you are worried about the over lap make a template of the head and lay them out where you want to do the install, do not forget to check what is beneath the holder as well....good luck

I recall Joe Kriz replaced the rod holders in his RPS with Lee's. there is a photo somewhere.
I suggest using the search engine.

I replaced mine as well but I believe joe and I both have the older style wooden RPS backs. On mine I needed to add a slight notch to the side of the RPS opening because the newer lees rod holders have the bottom pin that is not flush with the outside. You can make the notch even in the newer fiberglass RPS with a round file. It's covered by the flange of the rod holder so once everything is in place it won't be seen

Do you know the dimension (width) of the teak rps. I will compare that with the fiberglass one on my boat to see if it will fit. I did make a template and it appears there will be a little over hang.

The drawing in our Download section says the top teak piece is 3 3/8 inches wide.
That dimension will vary depending on how many time the owner has sanded that top piece.
How wide is your top piece?
My rod holders hang over about 1/16 of an inch on each side.

How wide are the Lee's rod holders you have?

Joe thanks for the response. The majority of the info I have gotten about using Lee's vertical rod holders has been from your threads and photos.
My RPS measures 3.5" wide.
I have not purchased the rod holders yet as I was trying to do my home work before making the investment.
From the Lee's website the template for the medium vertical shows a rod holder that 3-3/8" wide by 4-3/16" long.
I cut out a template and it appeared to have a bit of overhang. If yours do as well then I think I can live with it.
If I pull the trigger I will take some pictures and upload so everyone can see these rod holders on the fiberglass RPS.
On another note I have the RPS completley apart for cleaning and those Z legs will not get clean (yes I tried Penetrol)....thats another thread though...

Sounds like you got it and it should work well for you.
3 1/2" wide for the Fiberglass RPS
3 3/8" wide for the Lee's rod holders
That leaves you 1/8", a 1/16" on each side less.
My RPS had been sanded and is not 3 3/8" wide any longer.
That is why I have about 1/16" hangover on each side.
I often thought if I ever had to replace the top teak board, I would replace it with a 3 1/2" piece instead of the normal 3 3/8" that was normally standard for that piece.
