Also is this a 22 or a 24 gallon tank? (I googled it and found both results) Thanks Ruf 1989 Montauk 17' w/ F70 Yamaha

Yes, the Moeller web site lists it as 22 gallons in the link above. I believe this a typo. It happens. There is only one White tank like this. As far as the fuel gauge in the gas cap goes, contact Moeller customer service. They have been very good about responding and replacing some defective caps.

I then googled "Moeller 24 Gal" and found a site which lists a 22 Gal and a 24 Gal both with the same dimensions. The thing is, I think my tank says 22 Gal. Now my boat is about a hundred miles away so I can't check, but you'd think that a company like Moeller would get its act together. I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport.

I take it from their response that even though the tank will hold 24 gallons they state the capacity as 22 to prevent spills. I once filled my tank after a day on the water and the next day the gas had expanded and was leaking from the cap. I now leave about an inch of air and because the deck is slanted to the rear, if the fill were on the forward side of the tank I could probably fill it more. I winter in Ft. Member Posts: 1926 Comments: 16 Joined: 05/02/08	I believe Moeller has down rated the capacity of all of their on-deck tanks larger than 6 gallons. I have a pair of the BW 12's, which began life at 13 gallons rating, and are now 12's. Same for the long, low tanks that fit under Whaler thwart seats. All have been down-rated. I have a pair of the 20 gallon tanks under the stern quarters of my Ribside, and now that tank is being shown as only 18 gallons. I believe it was done because of the new anti-vapor/anti-spill EPA regulations on tanks. There is now more room for expansion also. And actually, they are more realistic capacities. On my 13's, I can only reasonably get about 12-1/2 gallons into them at most. If I forced 13 into them, I would spill gas doing ti, and they would always build up internal pressure and squirt gas when plugging in a fitting, or force fuel out the cap vent. Same for my 20's. From day one, I could only get 19 gallons into them at most. I think their earlier capacities were a stretch, and were for unrealistic brim full situations on an absolutely level platform.

Moeller shows another 22 gallon tank in White but on their website they show it as red. It has the same overall size as the white 22 gallon and the 24 gallon but has a fitting on top for a fuel gauge. This 22 gallon has the same shape as the 24 gallon except with a fuel gauge built in. Not sure what BR stands for in the part number but it appears that every tank that has the BR also has the built-in Fuel Gauge. 031626 22 gallon White 031626BR 22 gallon Red but they say is White (built-in fuel gauge) 031526 24 gallon Red EDIT: I just noticed something else. Both 22 gallon tanks are 29.25"Lx20.50"Wx12.25"H and the 24 gallon tank is 29.25"Lx19.00"Wx12.25"H How can the 24 gallon tank be 1 1/2 inches less in width yet carry 2 gallons more? I think Moeller needs to fix the sizes or gallons of their tanks on their website. Something is not right. Very poor information. It must have been one of the earlier manufacturings of this Whaler-specific white tank because it shows 24 gallon capacity on the tank itself. According to Moeller's response above, this must be the "actual gallon capacity (the full volume)", as the tank is the exact same as the ones I compared it to at West Marine which show 22 gallons as the capacity on them, now that Moeller is apparently listing these tanks at "recommended fill level" This change across their full tank line, combined with the fact that some online retailers use old info and/or incorrect pics most likely the cause of the confusion. The white tank made for Whaler's has not changed in any way though...I compared mine stamped with "24" side by side to the new ones sold at West Marine stamped with "22" and they are identical.

Member Posts: 8 Comments: 0 Joined: 04/23/15	One difference on the EPA compliant red tank is that the inside of the tank is coated to reduce vapors. I doubt 2 gallons different, but it reduces the volume somewhat.
