I'm trying to install two Lowrance transducers to the transom of my 1884, 18ft Outrage. I bought some 1/4" starboard and trying to laminate it into a 3/4" board 3"x15"x 3/4" (HXWXD). Store didn't have 3/4" thick. I'm having difficulty getting the starboard to laminate and be structurely sound. I'm using 3M5200 for adheavise and have sanded and wiped the surfaces with acetone prior to lay up and then clamped pieces together. I've sanded the hull and cleaned with acetone prior to adhearing with the 3M5200. Everything works well till I drilled and screwed transducer brackets to the starboaed. As I installed the screws the boards delaminated. I'm in the second go around and looking for opinions as to what is happening. I'm afraid to increase the size of the pilot holes fearing that the large size of the down scan transduer will pull the screws out. (But now that may be what I have to do.) Thanks for your help.

It's very hard to get anything to stick to starboard. You'll have to use thicker starboard or some other material. The only way to attach the starboard to the transom is to screw it on which defeats the whole purpose of using it. There is a device made for mounting a transducer which requires no screwing into the boat. Perhaps some will give the name of that item.

I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport.

I mounted an Airmar TM 265 (very large) CHIRP transducer directly to the transom with no problems.

Found it. It's called a "stern saver". Here's a link to a you tube video showing how to mount it.

I used HDPE screwed to the transom to mount one transducer two years ago, it is 1" thick. Mounting another transducer this week I needed 1-1/2" thick material to clear my trailer bunk. Ordered some 1-1/2" UHMWPE from http://www.hightechplastics.com/stics.com/. They have remnants of all types, sizes and thicknesses of plastics, very reasonably priced.

No, it is not Starboard, but my Whaler lives in covered storage so UV is not a problem. If your Whaler lives out in the sun, I suggest you research for UV resistance if using something other than Starboard. Other than that, I think both these products are suitable for mounting transducers.
