I just installed a 130 HP E-Tec on my 1984 Outrage 18, I had to make a desison on the prop with the purchase, so I got the 14-3/4" x 17" Viper. Any ideas on what to expect or suggestions on a different prop? I have not had it out yet as I still have a bit of work to do. Any comments would be appricated.

Well, that depends on what 1984 Outrage you installed the Evinrude E-TEC 130 on.

If you installed a new Evinrude E-TEC on a 1984 Outrage 18, then I'd say that is a great prop to use, though maybe slightly under-propped.

Try it out and let us know how it does.

Top speed should be 42 MPH if the motor was mounted three holes up as it should have be.

Tom, It's 4 cylinder, not the 6, Is that too big for the motor? Oh I see, it's an 18 footer.

The 25" shaft length (XL) E-TEC 130 uses the large gearcase from the V-6 motors even though it is only a V-4 motor.

It also uses a low 2.25:1 gear ratio. I suspect you will end with the 14-1/4" x 18" Viper instead, but test what you have and see how it does.

Check that motor mounting height.

Thanks Tom, the motor is mounted up to the the top most holes. No where esle to go. I got a couple of more weeks of work and then I run it. I think I'll not go for top end until I get 5-10 hours on it. I know about run it right out of the box but I'm gonna pay it slow.

I hope you meant to write "the motor is mounted up to the bottom most holes", like this:

o <-- Bolts through this hole

Even in the olden days of conventional two strokes, full throttle needed to be applied during the second hour of operation. Not for very long mind you but a minute or so was fine.

With the new E-TECs, which are run in at the factory before being crated, you do not even need to do that. If you want a fast motor, run it hard.

Waiting 5-10 hours is ridiculous. Read your Owners Manual and follow the advice offered.

Okie Dokie, will run it. You are correct in your example of bolting configuration.

Took the boat out to test run the new motor and prop. (1984 Outrage, 2013 130 hp E-tec 4 cyl. with the 14 3/4" X 17 Viper) had it up to 38 mph (gps) at 5700 rpm had two people on board and 30 gal. of fuel. I still had some throttle left but not much. Is this about right or should I go to a 19 pitch. Thanks for your help.

The optimum range for a 130HP is 5500-5750 RPM's Sounds like your pretty dialed in assuming that was WOT. The engine will get a bit faster once your past break-in.

The WOT range for the E-TEC 130 is 5500-6000 RPM, but the Optimum RPM Range is 5500-5650 RPM.

You are already beyond that with more throttle left? You need more pitch.

As I said earlier, I suspect you will end with the 14-1/4" x 18" Viper. 19" will be too much.

The dealer you bought it from should swap it out for you.

The 14-3/4" x 18" Viper is BRP part # 763916

Tom,
can you please provide a link to the 2013 RPM ranges? I could only find the listing for 2011 engines

thanks

Well, we took the boat out today for test running of the new prop, (1984 Outrage 130 hp, 4cyl, 14 3/4 x18 prop, 60 gal. fuel on board, two people, running into the wind, small chop.) Results-5700 WOT 40MPH. I am thrilled!! A little less fuel on board and I'm sure it will hit the expected 42 MPH. It handled great, just a little adjustment on the trim tab is all. Thank you Tom for your knowledge of props and sharing. So I declare the completion the restoration, the trailer is next. GO Whalers. We got a ton of "WOW what a beautiful boat!" Even from a lady whoe's husband was launching a brand new boat for the first time.
