I currently have a size 28 battery that came with the motor I bought for my 15 Whaler. It's older, but still works fine so I would like to use it. Unfortunately it looks like most batteries I see for sale around here are either size 24 or 27. Just planning for the future wise, I would like to get a mount for under the console that will fit both batteries. The mount I bought at West Marine is close, but does not fit the 28. Any suggestions? I don't want to run the box.

Edit: Looks like the local store no longer carries Size 27. It's size 24 or 31. I wonder if its worth the extra 14 #s and size under the console for the 31. The boat will have a bilge pump, stereo with 2 speakers and a chartplotter for electronics. Motor is a 2005 4 Stroke 60. What do you guys think?

Size 24 : 135 minute reserve, 800 CCA, 45 #s
Size 31: 210 minute reserve, 675 CCA, 59#'s

By "mount" do you mean battery box?

I have never heard of a Group 28 Marine battery. I can't imagine you needing anything more than a Group 24 battery.

Not a battery box, the one I bought is the one below:

I haven't heard of a 28 either, but that's my best guess at what it is because it's slightly larger than a 27 and says MAXX28 as the model. 24 should be more than sufficient, but the more the merrier in my book. Would hate to run out of juice from keeping the radio on at the sandbar or anchored up at night.

In googling, I see that Maxx is the Walmart house brand battery that is shown as Everstart Maxx##.

What are the dimensions of the battery in question.

For a small skiff like a 15 foot Whaler, I strongly recommend you use a battery box, not just some hold down.

There is no reason to use anything bigger than a group 24 battery. If "the more the merrier" were logical, you would have a D8 battery instead of a Group 28 battery. And if a D8 were good, two D8's would be better, and so on. That is silly because more battery comes with costs: weight and expense and space.

Also do not assume that a bigger battery will necessarily perform better. There are many different qualities of battery out there and you can almost certainly find a high quality Group 24 battery that will outperform a Walmart Group 28 battery. It might cost a little more but you save the headache of not being able to fit into a battery box.
