I just purchased an 85 13' Whaler and this will be the first of I am sure quite a few questions to come. I need to get an anchor. The boat will primarily be used used in fresh water rivers and lakes. I have a small mushroom style anchor but it wont fit in the compartment. Its close but the lid just wont close. What types are you guys using and do they fit properly in the compartment?
I'm not sure about the difference in the anchor lockers between the classic 13 and the '85. In my '68 I bought a Danforth-type anchor from Academy. It was too large to fit in the locker so I cut the rods shorter and also made the "blades" narrower so that it fits inside easily. I use it in tidal areas where the water gets to moving pretty fast at times. It holds well. I have had it drag a couple of times when the water picked up speed and I didn't have enough line out. I fish mostly sand and mud bottoms.

I use a grapnel type anchor. The tips of the anchor fold down against the shaft and store very easily in the front locker. Attached is a PWC grapnel but I would use a larger one for better holding power.
