I recently picked up from Craigslist two Chrysler tote tank 6 gallon metal fuel tanks. I am going to use these on my 13 foot Whaler with a 30 HP Johnson outboard. The tanks from what I can tell from some web searching are early 70's vintage. Both tanks are very clean on the inside there is no rust anywhere. The outsides have to be stripped and repainted, some goofball painted them in a drunken stuper from the looks of it. Both have the cork type float gas gauges and look to be in great shape. Is anyone using these tanks on their's ? They have the single outlet quick connect I'll have to get a female for the fuel line so it can be used with the Johnson. I payed $50.00 for the pair which I think is a good price, I guess I'm old school and prefer metal tanks over plastic.

I have metal tanks....no preference except when I discover how rare they are (good) and how they can lead to a world of hurt with rust (bad). On balance, if well maintained I see no reason to dump them. In my opinion, they look good too!

This may be a stupid question but if the metal tanks are kept full with oil mix and/or drained completely they shouldn't rust correct ?

They should not rust were the fuel/oil mix level is and below.I had one rust on the top of the inside of the tank were the gas did not reach when filled that caused me some headaches to find.I would check them prior to using them.
