Hi:
I have a Raymarine depth/fish finder on my Montauk 17 installed by the dealer. Works and functions fine.
When I use my portable VHF radio on the Montauk there is (?) interference on the VHF radio. I get a a ""busy"" note on the radio that is related to the Depth finder as if I get fat far away for it will quiet down and if I disconnect the fish finder power it will also do the same thing.
It is obvously NOISE. Are there any easy fixes to this problem? I want to have a VHF radio in case of an emergency.
gorji,
Interference can be caused by a lot of things.
1. Turn off your motor and all electronics.
2. If you still get interference, then something may be wrong with your VHF.
3. If you engine is running, then maybe you do not have the correct spark plugs that help prevent interference with radios. There are special spark plugs that help prevent radio interference.
You don't mention what brand of handheld VHF radio you are using...
Thanks for your reply. The ICOM VHF handheld works fine wih the engine running. Its the Raymarine fishfinder that is probably not shielded causing this problem. I Just don't know how to shield it. I want to continuously monitor 16 and 9 so I don't want to turn the FF off.
gorji,
I would recommend calling or emailing Raymarine and describe your situation.
They are a good company and make fine electronics. They should be able to help you.
The raymarine should not interfere with the handheld vhf. I could understand if it was not a handheld as then I would start looking at how the wires were running under the console.
