I have a 2003 Montauk 170 and I need to install cleats at the stern. I have side rails.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Use your lifting eyes for tying off, The Whaler just does not have enough glass to support a cleat unless you through bolt the cleat. You could also attach them/ one to your console and put a back support on the cleat (Just another idea, I do not like it but have seen it done before. Just make sure its not in the way of anything on the install)

Seeing Harvey's personal page, I see why he would want cleats. His 170 has a swim ladder on the port side and a kicker bracket on the starboard side.

I would check the wood locating diagram on whaler.com and see if the whaleboard pieces extends past the aft rail base. If so you can tap into that.

If there is no backing, you could use the hockey puck method (drill, dig out foam with inverted allen wrench and squirt gorilla glue) to add two cleats.

Phil
Thanks for taking the time to look at my situation. The wood locator shows that there are 3/8" x3x10 boards that start at the ends of the radius and go 10" towards the bow. It also shows 3/8" board in the rail in the corner.
I suspect the 10" board is there to anchor the rail post but I think there would be support for a 6 or 8" cleat aft of the rail post.
What I'd like is stern cleats like on your boat.
Thanks for your help.
Harvey

Have you looked at the newest Montauk 170 models?
They show a cleat on top of the gunwale just in front of the rear side rail stanchion.

That would work also but I can't tell from the wood locator exactly how far the board goes past the stanchion.
It's tough for me to measure because I live in Texas and the boat is South Carolina.
Thanks
Harvey

Harvey -

I used the hockey puck method to install amidship cleats. The technique is not hard or time consuming. Basic DIY skill level.

As for cleats, I got mine at my local chandlery, Hamilton Marine and are practically identical to the existing OEM cleats.

Look like this:

Perko also makes an 8 inch cleat in Marinium.
