as i have mentioned before (or maybe not) my cushion for the RPS is on it's last legs. currently, i am using it and it is secured to the RPS using several bungee cords. i need it higher - i'm 6'1" and want to be looking over the windshield when i sit. usually, i would stand, but with the state of the South Louisiana Mississippi River situation - I am envisioning some long runs to fish.

my "el cheapo" immediate solution is to grab a spare treated 4x4, cut it to RPS support length, and bolt it on. then, sit the RPS on top of it and bungee it down as it is now. of course, it may not be quite enough, but it'll be a good 1st pass. and, i don't want this as 'the permanent solution' ... but it should hold out until the 'season is over' which might be a couple of years.

however, if someone has a couple of spare pieces of teak laying around ... or has already fabricated something nice and cheap (emphasis on cheap) ... i'd like to know about it. my 'permanent solution' would be to put a couple of drawers or a shelf underneath for tackle and tools ... i am still wrestling with cheap due to my immediate needs of a bimini and getting the engine electrical problem straight.

by the way, did i ever mention this is my last boat (unless stolen or tornado destroyed) ? also, thanks to all those who have replied to my previous posts. especially Tom.

You can take your cushion to some local and have them make you a new one. You can buy one from one of the sponsors of this site or you can check ebay. Also with rasing the height of the seat. You can use starboard, wood, metal, Just trim to the RPS legs. I am also raising mine, I think I am goingt to take marine grade plywood. Stack it together Seal with several coats of epoxy all the way around. Screw that to the sole then add another stack of ply wood sealed in epoxy to that paint the hole stack in AwlGrip paint then attach RPS legs to it. When done it will be 6 inchs higher than it is now.

I have always raised the RPS seat 6".

If you enlarge this photo, you can see my varnished teak design solution. Console is raised 4" also.

so, does the 'riser' need to go on the bottom of the RPS legs ?

From my perspective, I think it is the best solution, since it keeps the original look and proportions of the RPS Also, you don't have to make new round grooves in the riser to hold the pivot bars. But others may disagree. I am often accused of being a "Whaler purist".

I think when raising the RPS there is only one way to do it and that is on the deck. Adding the extra height directly under the cushion would require all sorts of interesting and extra work. Slots for the pivot tubes, much longer bolts to go up and through the extra thickness and in to the cushion and I honestly believe it could put a serious extra strain on the Z legs. I would go with Finnegans method for simplicity and aesthetic appearance.

I always like this storage box under the seat and on top of the Z legs.
Look at the last 3 photos.

You can add a spacer either above or below the Z-legs.

The Outrage 22 in opening sequence of the remake of the movie The Italian Job had a very nice drawer built under the cushion of the RPS.

A true Whaler Purist would never alter the classic Whaler RPS by jacking it up!

I have always found the terms "Whaler purist"and "trailer queens" to be derogatory and non-complimentary, so am happy to now be officially relieved of that designation by Tom.

The problem with pre-1991 Classic Whalers of all types, is that they were designed by short people, for short people.
Unless you are less than 6' tall, you can't even stand up at the console under the 22 Outrage or Montauk Mills Flying Tops without brushing the fabric. And piloting the 1974-1983 center consoles would give any 6 footer a bad back in no time.

I do like the drawer idea but it is much different than what I had imagined. Just adding a couple of 4 inch risers on top of the Z legs and not bracing between both legs from side to side does seem to me like it could put a lot of stress on the legs themselves.

I'm 6'-2" and never felt the need to raise the console or RPS on any of my center console Whalers including my 1980 Montauk, my 1981 Montauk, my 1983 Outrage 18 or my 1988 Montauk.

Related question. Does anyone know the height measurement from the floor, to the underside of the standard height RPS?

I ask as I'm away from home, and spotted a cooler in Walmart that might fit underneath my RPS.

Ps, I'm with Tom: the proportions of the classic 18 have me leaving my RPS and console at the std height because of the look...yes, perhaps I'm a bit vain! I'm 5'-9 1/2", so the heights feel good anyways.

The box design was on my boat when I bought it from the previous owner. The box was teak plywood but the plywood bottom of the seat cushion was not and with no drainage between the box top and seat cushion bottom, it held moisture and rotted rather quickly.

I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport.

The RPS Z-legs themselves are 15" tall. Because of the the pivot frames you have only 14" of clearance underneath the seat, even less if the RPS has the original style Z-legs with do not have the notches for the Z-legs, because wood blocks were used to hold the pivot frames in place.

The Igloo 36 quart cooler fits nicely under the classic RPS. I used one in my Outrage 18.

Vist the RPS section of the Specialty Marine website, they sell 18" Tall Version RPS legs. It may violate the "cheap solution" theme, but would maintain the esthetics of the Whaler.
