I am new to the site and have recently started restoring my Dad's 1969 Nauset, no I don't have photos but I will try to post some if i can figure out haw to do it. It is completely striped down to the hull and set to go to the fiberglass shop. I would like to customize the boat with a fiberglass console, but I am not sure which console would best work with the model I have.

Any ideas? and advice on where to find consoles?

No Moose, I like the look of the fiberglass consoles in the Montauk but is there a certain year model I should use and do you have any idea where I can get one at a good price?

On another note I am rethinking sending my boat to the shop for the glass work. They want $3500 to refurbish it but I am a little tight (okay squeaky) and was thinking of tackling the job myself. Any suggestions or references to follow?

what glass work were you going to have done? It's amazing what you can do to these boats with soap/water and some rubbing compound. If the rubbing compound doesn't work, find a product called Buff Magic and try that, do a search on this site and you should find a thread where i used it on a 13 footer.

If you want to move to a montauk type console, i would go with either the 77-82 or the 86-90. take a look here.

It is best to see them in person before you decide. As to where to get one cheap, good luck. I looked for about six months to get the one I wanted and it was five hundred dollars and I have to do some work to it. You might get lucky, I would check craigslist everyday in the areas you are willing to drive to, and post on craigslist what you want. Try to get one with the doors still on it if you can.

yeah what they said. look every day. They do pop up from time to time. When you find one the year will not seem as important you will not want to pass on one to wait for the next one to come along. I would think the older winged console would match your boat period the best as you do not have a smirked hull.

I would not be afraid to look at other makers consoles either. I am not talking about buying something new, that would look weird, but if you bought something like a older mako console it would not look bad. My console thoughts have changed no less that 4 times since I have been working on my project hull. I still kick myself for letting a newer whaler console slip by a couple of years ago. first I wanted factory console and rps. after I found it I wanted newer rps. after I found it I had to raise the console to match the higher seat height. Now again I would love to get my hands on a newer style console. I have spent a lot of time on the console for my project boat and looked at alot of consoles on line this is why I say some other older consoles would not ruin the look of your boat.

If you do buy one and then decide you like a different one better, you may be able to sell the old on too. I had a newer one and decided I wanted the winged console and sold my newer one in less than three days.

Thanks for all the good advice guys. As soon as I figure out how to make a personal page, I will post my pics of the boat.

Hard to tell what the first number is but they didn't go up to 9...

A 39200 would make it a 1968 model.

Sanding is no fun. I started my overhaul of my hull in November and I am at the point to spray gel on the bottom.

Welcome Cajun50, Looks like a great project boat. Me I would go with the classic wood console. But then again I'm a oldtimer who likes the old ways. I also like the small Louisiana reg. number three digits wow! Just shows how slow a whaler changes hands!

Are you going to install that double kitchen sink in your 3rd photo?

Will the console and seat from a 1973 Montauk fit right in to this boat? It sure looks like a very similar hull to my '74 Montauk and I think I have a line on the interior stuff from a '73 Montauk. Not too sure it would be worth going from NY to La. but these things are pretty hard to find. I found a fellow up here who has owned a few Whalers and has some stuff I don't need Like a Mills Bimini in great shape off an '89 18' outrage that will not fit my Montauk 17'.

Hope it is ok to post this stuff when I find it.
