I look at it if the installation of one or several bilge pumps leaves you with the peace of mind to react in a calmer fashion once taking water. Put them in. The knowledge in the back of your mind that you know some of the water is leaving leaves you disposed for passing out the life jackets, working the radio, etc.... . Go for it. I had a stalled motor, 3 guests, snagged crab traps, water up to the cuddy cabin entrance, one bilge, one hand pump, one bucket. I cut the downrigger lines, put two people to work, fired up the motor to bail the boat (1979 22' Revenge). The looks on my passengers faces, as I was reassuring them of the self bailing feature (worked great) and any of the advertising of the sawed in half boat that does not sink, did not cut it with the angst of taking water. I now have the 4 pumps available for water removal.
