Thanks Tom!
You explained that very good. I'll come back when I have had time to test again. Unfortunatly not this weekend.
I've tried to tightened harder without success, but I quess it's logical as the hub/brass tube is in contact first and the play is between the propeller housing and the outer contact surface and there is rubber in the hub that can flex in between.
When I changed to a large diameter stainless prop on my 60 Merc, I too was introduced to "prop rattle".
Since this was a new prop I retightened the prop on the shaft 3 times and each time the rattle dininished. I raised the motor up one set of bolt holes and this diminished the rattle even more. Finally I added back my Dole Fin and now it is almost not noticable and goes away completely at anything above 1,000 rpm.
The increased performance of the much larger and heavier prop certainly "outweighs" the minor rattle I now experience.
The proper term for the noise you guys are hearing is "(gearcase) clutch rattle". The heavier SS props cause the gearcase clutches to make that sound due to the firing frequency of a 4-stroke engine.
In the case of the Suzuki, as mentioned, a switch to a Mercury Flo-Torq III hub kit and a small hub Laser II prop in 19" pitch could provide good performance and get rid of the clutch rattle at the same time.
