I just purchased a 2010 Montauk 150 for open ocean fishing in Hawaii. I want to put an kicker motor such as a Yamaha 6 on a Garelick brack as a backup to the main motor. Does anyone have experience with a kicker motor on this particular model as far as engine size, shaft length, bracket recommendation?

Do they have towing services / insurance such as SeaTow, TowBoatUS in Hawaii? That might be a better choice than a kicker - the newer motors idle so efficiently, you don't need to use a kicker for fuel savings.

I have a Montauk 170 which I take offshore. I don't use a kicker offshore because I can troll slowly OK with my Merc 90. It's a 2 stroke. If I had a 4 stroke I wouldn't even consider a kicker. I have a Merc 20" 6hp that I use sometimes to work in skinny water but I use it less and less. I have a push pole and it usually gets me out of trouble. The best thing I've done lately is replacing my two six gallon tanks with a Moeller 25.

I confirmed with Boston Whaler today there is no plywood on the transom for mounting an auxilary bracket. My local dealer told me they do it all the time by cutting out section on the transom and replacing the foam with a plate? I'm not so sure this is good and wonder if anyone out there has every successfully mounted an auxilary motor on a 2010 Montauk 150?

My apologies. I didn't realize there was such a difference between the 150 and the 170. You can see the wood locating models on www.whalerparts.com

I am almost convince it is impossible to mount a kicker motor on a Montauk 150 year 2010 model because Boston Whaler told me there is no plywood backing on the transom for it. They did it to cut cost I was told. Guess I have to rely on tow service instead but in Hawaii when you are trolling along the reef it is nice to have a backup in case your main motor stops so you can get out before being caught by the incoming surf. Tow service will not be timely in this situation.

So one I'll ask one more time if anyone has seen or knows someone who has figured out how to mount a kicker on this model boat.
