Bow mounting a electric trolling motor

Member Posts: 25 Comments: 1 Joined: 07/09/06	Can't seem to find info or pictures , sure question has been asked before .. sorry to ask again ....have 1973 16'9"bare hull, home made center console, want to mount an electric trolling motor in the bow..no bow rail Need some suggestions / pictures .. would like to flip up when underway.. also recommendation on motor mfg and size.. want to use it for shallow water fishing Thanks

Member Posts: 26 Comments: 0 Joined: 07/22/11	Here are some pictures from the Riptide SP 55# on my 1986 Montauk. It sits on the Minn Kota quick release bracket. The motor is plenty powerful enough for where I fish - freshwater and inshore. The Co-Pilot remote is a nice feature. The kids can fish from the front of the boat, but I can control the motor from anywhere. That comes in handy when you are untangling lines and baiting hooks. There is wood in the bow step, but only two of the four holes for the puck hit wood. The two screws that did not hit wood were seated using the hockey-puck method. A quick search on this site will detail that method if you are unfamiliar with it. The bow step sits slightly below the top of the rub rail, not allowing the bracket to fully seat on the quick mount puck. I trimmed a notch out of the rub rail plastic in order to solve the issue and spread the weight/load of the motor over as much as the bow step as I could. Appears everyone uses the Minn Kota... now just have to go buy one .. and do the hard part ...drill holes in my old Whaler. Like the idea of Co-Pilot which does not require a foot pedal to control.
