1971 Katama turned into a CC.
It has a 115 that I'm getting rid of due to weight and overkill. I have the opportunity to trade the 77 115 Johnson for a 97 50hp Johnson. I'm tempted because of the year and condition of the other motor. I also know that if I don't like it I will get good value for it in sale and be able to size up if needed. I'd mount it on a kicker as high as possible.
I will be doing a full restoration and repower in the next 2-3 years so this would be a stop gap of sorts.
I also have a 70 and an 88 hp option but they are older motors and the resale 2 years from now wouldn't be as high. I plan to go to a new 80-90 2 stroke after she is complete.
What can I expect from a 50 on a dry 17' hull?

Here are the weights of the current motors.

If the 115 runs good, I would leave it. Why spend money on a temporary engine if you don't have to? I don't think that old 115 weighs too much for the 17' hull as compared to the newer engines listed above.

I'm sort of in agreement on the 115 but it is an unknown to me. The guy says it ran 3 yrs ago when they garaged it. I've had a lot of interest in buying it from me and my time is limited. I'm thinking I'd rather go with a known commodity and spend my time on the water and not in the driveway tinkering with a 30 year old motor. In a perfect world I could service the old dog and it would fire right up.

I have a 17' Dauntless with a 115 2-stroke Yamaha, an it is just right. Keep your known engine until you are ready to buy the "engine of your dreams"

I would stay w/ the 115, there was a guy I worked with who had a 50hp on a 17' Montauk, I asked how well it did on the boat, he kind of shrugged his shoulder's and said that it got up on plane, he didn't look too excited about it's performance. I would wait and save for at least a 90 hp (standard Package).

What do y'all think about a 75HP 4 stroke for a 17'?

FYI, think I'm going with the 88hp off the like whaler, too many unknowns in the 115 and too little time to run through them...although I'd love to.

88 hp will be great. Best of luck and get out there!
