My brother-in-law recently handed me down his 1993 Montauk. I believe it’s been cared for and is in good shape. This is my first boat! I’m kind of a fanatic on having clean and polished cars. I’d like to do the same for this Boston Whaler.

Any advice anyone could give me on cleaners, polishers, stain removers, decal removers, scuff removers, teak oils, urathanes or any specialty solvents would be appreciated. Also, if you have any suggestions on a website to purchase the above, that would be great too.

Thank you very much. I have a lot to learn.

Hi, there are a lot of different types of cleaners. From my experience a lot of times if a manufacturer puts the term "marine" on a bottle it costs twice as much. Some basic cleaners will work. For decal residue I use the Goo Gone that now comes in wipes. Always test a small area first. Good biodegradable boat soap from West Marine works well with a good deck brush. By far the best cushion cleaner is made using Oxy Clean. There is a simple mixture you can make up by following directions on the bottle. Oxyclean also works well when combined with some boat soaps for scrubbing dirty decks and floors. Always test a small area first. Some people also like a product called Woody Wax, I havent used it but you can ask around. Hope this gives you a little help getting started

Congrats on the boat.

Here are my cleanup picks: Google any of this stuff and you'll find it.

Gelcoat Cleaning and conditioning:
3m Compound
3m Color Restorer
3m Scotchgard Wax
- Use a Porter Cable or similar Orbital Polisher
- If oxidation or scratches or stains are tough are still showing, wet-sand with 1000, 1500 then 2000 grit, then do the compound, restorer and wax deal.
- For non-skid, I just use a pressure washer and leave it at that

Sticker Removal:

ScrapeRite Plastic razor blades
Blow Dryer
Goof Off

Stainless - NevrDull
Black Plastics and Rubber - Penetrol
Windshield - Mother's Plastic Cleaner/Polish

Wood - Not sure if a 93 has much wood, but if so:
I like the look of varnish
Sand with an orbital with 150, 220, 320
Hand sand with a block 320, 400
Clean off dust - compressed air and a bit of acetone on a rag
4 coats of Petit Captain's Varnish, min 12hrs apart, sanded lightly with 400 between coats

I've documented some of the process in this photo album:

I'm doing the Gelcoat Cleanup and Wood on a pal's '72 Cohasset II right now.
