Has anyone added a bow pulpit, teak most likely, to their Whaler? I'm thinking of adding one to my Outrage 18....

CC Sam,

You came to the right place...
I made one for my 1985 Outrage 18. You can view my Teak version here:

There are also plans from an original pulpit that you can make yourself.

My Montauk came with one with the railing wrapped around it, very safe when on the bow working with the anchor. You should be able to see it in my avatar

i forgot about that larger pic.

Just for trivia,, i just completed an 8 week boater safety course thru USCG and learned a bit about required lighting . Can anyone see what's wrong with my lighting since the bow light is relocated?

I'll bite ! state or federal lighting laws ? Rail mounted ? Light does not meet new brightness specs ? Bow light is "ON" but, "Anchor" light is "OFF" ? should have port and starbord lights, instead of a "COMBO" unit ?

Rich,

I depends on what year your Montauk is but the bow light needs to be higher than the stern light under any circumstance. Boats made today need to have the stern light one meter higher than the bow light.

You're gonna need one very l o n g stern light pole!

tom got it right !!!!!!!!,,
by the "letter" of the law,, i need to extend my stern light to pass a UCSG Auxillary inspection but i'm not planning on lowering my bow light, it works too well.
If you ask me it makes more sense to have the bow light higher since i'm usually going forward,, duh!!
my 2 cents

Hi,

Interesting ! I went to a few marine stores in my area (L.I.) and was surprised to see that none of the Anchore lights on display were 1 meter high. I asked about the reg of being 1 meter high, and was told that "some guys buy the Anchor light, and add a 3' piece of Alum. tubing to raise the light 1 meter, to meet regs". The only one I saw was the plug in type that meet regs. I have (2) 15" lights in the back on my 15' sport 1 on ea. corner. It lights up well but, not to specs. I've asked about this (not wanting to get a ticket) to law enforcement, and was told "Don't worry about it" and that when a boat is pulled over, it's for a good reason (bow riding, etc.). I was also told that when a vessel is pulled over, they can tell by looking at the boat quickly, if it's in good shape or not," your boat's in good shape, I highly doubt that you will get a ticket for equipt. on this boat". I walked away feeling fairly confident but, was a tad concerned about another officer (unkown) who might pull me over, and is having a bad day.

MW,

I wouldn't worry about it. I have NEVER heard if anybody ticketed because they had working stern light but it was not one meter higher than the bow light. What boat do you have? Year? Model?

Hi,

It's a 1976 15' sport, it was pretty simple but, over the years there were a few add on's VHF, D/F, auto bilge, etc.

If it's a 1976 Sport 15 then the stern light does NOT need to be one meter higher than the bow light. A standard 3 foot-ish stern light will wok just fine and get you in compliance with the law.
