Actual Location of Stenciled Number

I'm working with a very old BW - According to owner his father bought it from someone in 1972 and boat was 10 years old at the time. I'm figuring that it may be a 62 Eastport.
From Specs I see: "Whalers prior to 1972 used a Stencil number only, to identify the hull. This Stencil number was located on the inside of the transom.
These did not use the metal tag with the embossed or stamped HIN (Hull Identification Number)."
16'/17' HULL SERIAL NUMBERS (prior to 1972)
1961-1962 ......... 3000 thru 3999
1962-1963 ......... 30000 thru 31499
1963 ................. 31500 thru 31600
1964 ................. 31601 thru 33000
1965 ................. 33001 thru 34399
Exactly how big is this stenciled number and where is it located? If painted over, what should I use to pull the paint and not the stencil? And where should I rub?

Most Whalers have the stenciled number on the inside face of the splashwell but very early Whalers had the stenciled number in the bow locker.
The stenciled number is gel coat, not paint so it is very difficult to remove without grinding off the gel coat down to laminate. What they do at the factory when they build the hull is stencil the mold first with contrasting color gel coat and then the hulls' gel coat is sprayed on top of that.

My 63'Nauset has the number 31130 in 1-1/2" white numerals stenciled in the forward bow locker...

Exactly where in the bow locker is the stenciled number? Is the sprue hole in the bow locker as well?

On my `61 13 footer the number is stenciled on the floor of the bow locker in the middle.

Same here. .... 1963 Nauset....its on the floor of the anchor locker, just below the eye that would connect the anchor rhode.

I guess a picture would answer a thousand questions...
Can't get to it until the Spring...
Just pop the lid...pull the anchor...either it's there or not.....

The stenciled number is there or it is not, but that does not mean it is visible.
In this case the hull has been painted inside and out. A reasonable estimation of where the number may be located and positioned will save a great deal of paint scraping.

Maybe this could get added to the model year specs? The stencil location is handy when looking at whalers long distance, helps to identify the year and if the boat has been painted or re-gelcoated but being sold as "all original"

That is a good idea. It now appears there was even a period when the Stenciled Number was found in BOTH the bow locker and the splashwell.

I was thinking more along the lines of adding stencil location to the Stenciled Serial Number Identification article. The stencil number stays pretty readable while those tiny metal plates can be tough to read. Knowing where it should be is always helpful if you suspect that the hull has been painted or one that has been regelcoated (not usually the case). When I was calling around, for the 13, that was always my first question, can you get me the stencil number?. Gave me a good feeling the hull was original, not painted. In on case the lack of a stencil number confirmed the hull was not a whaler, but a whaler clone.
