I signed up for Sea Tow on Sunday. And got towed about 20 miles today. hehe
My motor died. I think I sucked up seaweed and over heated it.

As Joe would say, maybe I'm lucky and I'll have to by a E-tec.
I'll check it out more tomorrow.

That Sea Tow is great. I called and they were to me in less than 1/2 hour. Hauled me home in another half hour. Good thing I had my cell phone and gps. I gave them my exact co ordinates. Grin

Comforting to know someone is out there to help. Glad it worked out for you!

i got Sea Towed a couple weeks ago. I had some recurring water/fuel issues.

I was out a couple fridays ago, in some nasty weather. 5 footers on long Island sound rain and wind.

Sea tow was there in less than hour. Did a great job!!!

Sea Tow captain told me, without a membership (149.00), it would have cost me about 400.00 cash or credit card.

the membership is worth it's weight in gold!!!

"Sea Tow", with response time in under an hour (even on a Sat in July), it is a great deal for $149 (you'll pay hard if NOT a member), they used to let you sign up at the first tow, then it got crazy, and they stopped doing that. It's the one service that I sign up for, and hope I never have to see ! It's good to know that they are there, last summer a boat I was on died (computer on engine failed), when leaving us at the dock after the tow, the Sea Tow captain ("Alan", everyone knows him) was pulling away and said I just need to see 1 member on board's "Sea tow" membership card, there were 5 people on board.....5 yellow cards came out of wallets, the guy just laughed, nice folks at Sea Tow, they can be hailed on Channel 16 here but, hang out on channel 10, cell phones can drop calls on the water, best to use the V.H.F. Marine radio for hailing them, direct contact is made with the Sea Tow captain then.

What happened to the good old days when you would get towed from a passer by and they wouldn't charge you anything? I always assist vessels. It's proper boating etiquette and I’m hoping it will spread.

Richard, I heard that there are too many liability issues with towing someone. That could be bs, but I feel $150 is cheap insurance. It is unlimited towing. Even if I need a tow from my canal to the ramp or to the mechanic.

If I see someone in trouble, I am going to help/tow. The ocean is no place to fool around.
I have done several tows and do at least two rescues each year.

Here is a post of one two weeks ago.

I concur with Islander. If I see someone stranded, I'm going to tow if neccessary. I have done numerous tows, and feel good that I was able to help. I have been towed in once from 25 miles offshore after the stator died on a two week old 200 Johnson. Not a good feeling. A local charter towed me to within 10 miles of shore, then BoatUS towed me the rest of the way. What a helpless feeling.

Art, I've heard if they throw you their bowline that takes the responsibility off you. That could be bs also.
Islander, that is a good story. The water can be a dangerous place regardless if its in the ocean or lakes. We don't have gills. I'll continue to assist.

When my engine quit 2 weeks ago, we were about 8-10 mi offshore and there was nobody for miles but a lobsterman. After realizing the engine was really dead, we gave him a wave as he started to head in. He agreed to tow us, but seemed a bit reluctant. We got his address and sent him something as a thank you. No doubt I'd give a tow if anyone were in need, just seems like the right thing to do. It is a helpless feeling being dead in the water offshore, one I never want to experience again! BTW, is there any kind of "Good Samaritan" law to remove liability for those who are reluctant?

I would help anyone in need too. And my paying $149 for SeaTow has nothing to do with that.

But, with the twisted laws, I could see towing someone and getting sued because something went wrong.

That's why you need liability insurance and an umbrella policy to cover your ass ets.

This thread sure took off in a ugly direction.

For an additional $29 I have the towing option on my Progressive Insurance Boat policy. I haven't had the need to use towing services yet, but Progressive tells me that I can use any one of the major tow services and I have selected the up to $500/tow option for unlimited tows. Seems like a good value with alot of flexibility. They reimburse for the towing cost in 14 days. FYI ...

I added that to my Progressive policy as well. Sounded pretty good at the time.

I am sure, that Just about everyone on here (W/C) would drop everything to assist a fellow boater in need, especially if there was "Danger" present, it's "OLD SCHOOL" training that many of us learned as little sailors, we were taught to "Always assist, it might be YOU some day", I've towed in (and continue to tow in) anyone in "Distress", and you are to NEVER accept any $ for it ! Those were the rules..........Can we depend on other boater's now ???????? One time before I had my boat, I was retrieving a 22 foot sail boat with a friend from one part of L.I. to another part, we went "Soft aground", no "sea tow", we waved for help, two boats pulled up near and looked at us but, then I heard the engines pick up in RPM as they pulled away, it was a pretty lousy, empty, feeling. We went below to grab some chow, and wait for the tide to come in, when we heard someone yelling outside "You guys O.K", the rattiest looking 17 foot Montauk, I ever saw in my life threw us a line and pulled us off the soft aground, they took NO money, "Get outta here" I was told...... they just waved "Bye" as we threw the line back, and took off ( a little 9.9 "piddler" pushing us), It may have been a ratty montauk but, it sure looked GREAT to us ! I got "Sea Tow", I know I can depend on THEM !
