Outrage 20', named "Outrage V20" from 1978 till 1985, has a hull's deadrise of about 10.5 degrees.
Does enybody know what is the deadrise of outrage 20 models 1986-1899 and, in general, what are the hull differnces between the two models?

renzo,

The Outrage V-20 was made from 1977 to 1979.

The Outrage 20 was made from 1980 to 1989.

I do not know the deadrise of the Outrage 20 models.

V-20 was actually 12 degrees (per Larry Goltz's measurement)

the later 20 Outrage was 16 degrees

thanks guys,
but according to http://continuouswave.com/whaler/ "Outrage V-20", it seems that V20 was produced from 1978 till 1985 although boats made from 1980 to 1985 carry only the Outarege20 decal on their hulls.
So, the very different among the two "outrage 20" models carried out in 1985, indeed at this year, also the lenght of the hull changed to 20'3".
V20 has a very "soft" deadrise but I havent found any informations about models from '85 to '89.
I'm interested in this topic becouse I'm negotiating to buy an outrage 20' - 1985(?).

bye

renzo,

My research comes from Boston Whaler and their catalogs and paperwork.

Let's think about this.
Do we think Boston Whaler would produce two 20 foot Outrage models during the same year?
I don't think so.. So, apparently they just changed the name from the V-20 to the Outrage 20 up until 1986 when they actually changed the hull to 20' 3" ......

It appears that the V-20 even though it was renamed the Outrage 20, was made from 1977 to 1986 and possibly 1987.... The catalogs are not clear on the 1987 model. However, the 1986 catalog shows the 19' 10" model which is the same old V-20 hull.

As you can see from my research and the description, I have the correct lengths listed for the Outrage 20 model differences. I am probably going to change this to add the V-20 in there somewhere because it is a different hull.
http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...album_id=9

Thanks

PS... I do my own research and will not use anyone else's material as that other material could be wrong...... As you can see from the link you mentioned, you state up until 1985... This is NOT true... The catalog clearly shows the 1986 model is 19' 10" long. This is why I do my own research....

Outrage 20 and Outrage V-20 are synonomous. Whaler dropped the V-20 deisgnator after they stopped production of the older banana hulls in the early 1980s.

There is no difference between the 1978 Outrage V-20 and the 1985 Outrage 20. The new Outrage 20 was introduced in 1986 and was a complety new hull based essentially on the 22 foot hull without the last two feet.

It should be noted that many Whaler models did not show in the literature until well after their actual introduction. For example, the Outrage 18 was introduced in May of 1981 yet there is no Outrage 18 in any Whaler catalog until the 1983 catalog.

Tom,

True.....

However, the specifications listed for the Outrage 20 in 1986 and the catalog states that the Outrage 20' is 19' 10" long.... So the 1986 year model is still the V-20 hull according to the specifications.

In the 1988 catalog, it states the Outrage 20' is 20' 3" long.... So, in 1988, this is the newer style 20' hull based on the 22' hull design....

I cannot find any specifications for the 1987 20' model so I am unsure if the 1987 model has the older V-20 hull or the newer style hull.

Joe,

*(Check the price lists)*

Clearly by February of 1986, it was the newer Outrage 20 they were selling. In fact, I remember seeing the new Outrage 20 at the Los Angeles Boat Show in January of 1986 and being pleased to see the deeper V and the increase in maximum power to 200 HP. Oh, how I wanted one of those back then!

Tom,

Wow, the only thing in the price lists that give the new model away is the 77 gallon fuel tank.
No mention of the length of the boat.

Here is what I have gathered and came up with then.

The first time any mention of the newer style hull is shown is the February, 1986 price list.

So, it appears that the 1986 model year was the transition year.
This means that there were some 1986 Outrage V-20 models and some 1986 Outrage 20 models with the newer style hull.

I gather this from the price list for August of 1985 which shows the 63 gallon fuel tank and because the boats made from July 1985 to February 1986 when the 1986 price list came out, were all 1986 models....

So, the boats made from July of 1985, which were all 1986 year models, still had the older V-20 style hull... Sometime, maybe January of 1986 as Tom mentions, they changed the hull in mid year production, to the newer style Outrage 20 hull...

The most immediate visual difference between the old V-20 hull and the newer Outrage 20 hull is the removable bow steps.

I am going to start focusing on the 1986 model now as the ones built from July of 1985 to December of 1985 should all have the removable bow steps. Remember, these boats built during this time frame are all 1986 year models.

The ones built from about January 1986 to June 1986 should not have the removable bow steps yet they will also be 1986 year models....

I didn't realize the V-20 hull was around so long mainly because the name was changed to the Outrage 20 and I didn't think anything else about it....

renzo,

The bow steps are inside the boat and in the front bow area.
Here is a photo of the mid 1986 and earlier removable bow steps.

These particular steps also have storage where the mid 1986 and later Outrage 20' do NOT....

Here is a photo of the later bow steps which are not removable and do not have the storage.

Also note the mid 1986 and earlier had only 1 bow locker.

The later 1986 to 1989 had 4 bow lockers...

Joe,
at first, I was thinkin at BW19O, a little bigger than my BW17O (in Venice I have some problems to dock).

But, surfing the web, i've found this BW V20 Outrage that seems to be intersting:
http://www.prestigeyacht.it/bm.aspx?i...po=4&dst=W

what are You thinking about?.

renzo,

That is clearly the earlier Outrage 20 (V20) with the shallower deadrise.

Tom,
why are You so sure? Which element have You take into considerations?

In Your opinion, is there a big differnce between the old and the new hull mainly regarding the sailing behaviour on the waves?

thanks.

One way you can tell that this one is an older hull is the missing benches in the bow.
It looks to me that there may have been more than one hull design for the 20 before 1985. Besides the missing steps in the bow, the pics you posted look different than my 1984 Outrage 20. I could be mistaken.
I assume that although the Outrage V20 isn't as good for rough water as the newer hull, it is still more suited for it than a Montauk.
I have been out on mine and it is an ocean worthy boat which will serve my needs beautifuly. Grin

Renzo,

The boat that is listed in the link says it is an 1984 which is wrong. It is more like a 1979 - 1982. You can tell by the console and the raised ridge running down the center into the cockpit. I have only seen that on early V-20's.

Renzo,

I can be sure because the photo very clearly shows the lack of integral bow steps which, as Joe has correctly pointed out above, means it is the original 20 foot Whaler hull.

Jeff,

You are right about the console, it is from a 1978 to 1982 Whaler but strictly speaking, it could have been retrofitted to a newer hull.

The distinction you make about the "ridge" in the bow is true of ANY of the original 20s (V20 or otherwise) made from model years 1978 to early 1986, so that alone does not mean it couldn't be a 1984.

Joe,

You got the clue...the fuel tanks.

Yes, both 20s were made for the 1986 model year, which back then began August 1st. Mid year model changes were not unusual for Whaler. Often there was almost no fanfare at all with the introduction of a new model or improvement of an old one.

Tom out of the 3 V-20's I have seen in person 2, a 1979 and the other was a 1984, had that ridge the other a 1985 I did not remember having the ridge. I must be wrong in my memories.
