I purchased a 16'7" Whaler with a title that shows a date of manufacture of 1974, here in San Diego of all places.
I believe it to be a Cohasset II. It has the stamped serial number 3A8686 but the HIN on the transome badge is too badly worn to identify.

Interestingly enough, instead of a bow light, it has a very cool, small anchor roller mounted on a wood (mahogany) base. It definitely looks original as does most everything else about the boat.

It has the reversible pilot seat which is on a base which sits over the fuel tanks which are plastic. The two base supports are moulded plastic and unfortunately one is broken.

It has a teak swim step to the starboard side of the transom. That too looks like it might have been original.

Lots of crazing on the deck interior. The hull, however is nice. Even the rubrail is in good condition. She needs a lot of work to get her the way I would like to, but with the Suzucki 85 that just needs a bit of tuning, I think I got a good deal at $2,250.00.

I should have photos in the next day or so and I will do my best to post. In the meanwhile, any comments or additional insight, would be most appreciated. Is this as rare a model as I believe it may be??

Anyone have any photos of a similar vintage Cohasset II that I could use as a reference?

Best,
JB

Of course we have photos of the Cohasset II.
All you needed to do was look through the Photo Galleries under "Whaler Model/Year Index"...

Here is a direct link:

I can tell you the anchor roller on wood is not original...

Great price... You stole that boat...

Thanks Joe...that looks like it. I will post photos of my boat tomorrow or Wednesday.
That bow roller looks suspiciously original. It appears to be very similar to the foundry aspects of the typical Whaler Bow lights. I wonder if it was an option available for this era? Maybe a prior owner disengaged the original bow light and installed the roller.

Any way of finding the hull number from the serial number?

Thanks again...
JB

JB,

I had the same problem with the missing HIN and e-mailed the stencil number to Chuck Bennett at Whaler (cbennett@whaler.com). He was great and able to cross reference their records and send me the original HIN as well as production date and other interesting original info on my hull. Give that a try, I think you'll find exactly what you're looking for.

Dave...

Thanks for the tip and Chuck's email. I have sent him my request. I took a look at your Outrage and the photos you have posted. Sorry to learn of your motor mishap.
My boat has similar gelcoat cracks all over the inside deck. Did you undertake repairs for this on your boat?

JB,

Chuck's great and will even clear up the mystery of the specific model.

When I first got the boat, I asked around as to what would be involved in fixing the interior cracks, and it seems very labor intensive as the small ones are everywhere on the inside of my boat (except on the non-skid strangely?). Word I got is that they'll reappear if they're coated over with paint or gelcoat, and to be honest, I don't even notice them anymore. From what I've learned, they're quite normal on older Whalers like ours and nothing to worry about, unless they're larger and risk letting water in, then they'd need repair.

Keep us posted on what you find out!

Dave

I communicated with Chuck Bennet today and he confirmed that I have a Cohasset II. He also informed me that the boat was shipped to either its first owner, or an independent dealer named Dive 'N Surf which was in operation in Redondo Beach, California. The ship date was 5/1/74.
Very cool.
I have photos I will try to load.
Thanks boys...
Best,
JB
