1966 13' cable steering question

I have a problem with the cable steering system with my 13' boston whaler

Basically the cable/pulley system was working fine, I took off the console to refinish without paying attention to the grooved steerer drum and how the cable wrapped around it. Does anyone know how the cable wraps around the grooved drum underneath the steering wheel? thanks!!!

That's a perfect picture of the cable. I too have the same problem. In trying to redo what I had undone a year or so ago, I couldn't remember how to reassemble it. Does anyone have an idea of how long the cable should be? I'm going to buy new cable and wondered about the length. Also, is there a trick to re-rigging the cable? Do you start by connecting the ends at the engine or begin with the wraps around the steering post?

Gerry,

The cable is not that expensive. I used clear plastic coated cable.

It is preferred to start at the steering wheel end first. You must first measure out how much cable you will need and be sure to allow for the port side since the cable runs all the way to the port transom and then back to the motor clip. Once you find the center of the cable, you wrap it as shown above. What I did at this point was to take a tie wrap and secure the two cables together since they both exit the hub toward the starboard side. This keeps the cable on the hub and in the grove while you lead your cables aft.

The cable coming off the top of the drum should be the short one (starboard side cable aft) and the lower one should be your long one (port side cable aft). Make sure you mark the cable ends with tape so you can keep them straight while threading the cables.

Once you get your cables pulled, secure them to the engine clips. Cut your tie wrap under the console and take up the remaining slack. Check your alignment and adjust the cables to make sure the wheel is centered as well as the motor. Tighten up your clamps but do not cut the excess cable yet. Give the new system a couple of test turns from hard over to hard over. Marke sure all the pullies are moving smoothly and the steering moves easliy. If it dose not, ease the cables just a bit and try again until you like the result. See that the springs at the engine take up any bounce in the cable. If you are satisfied, cut the excess cable off and tape the ends.
