Hi Guys...im the proud new owner of a 1969 BW 16/17 hull. It has no console or anything else ....lol I would like to fabricate myself a basterdized version of the Montauk Console.....does anyone have or can share with me the overall dimensions. I plan to build this project with the console a bit further aft than the original Montauks and for seating bolt in a nice leaning post and perhaps even modify the forward deck so it could be easier to walk on.......im open to any suggestions......as they say i found myself a clean slate to create a masterpiece

Reel,

Congrats! If you do not mind me asking what was the final bid from ebay? I will take some measurements tonight and get them up here for you. It is something I have been meaning to do for a long time.

BTW I changed your title for ease of searching later.

Here is a good article on the Standard (Montauk) Consoles through the years.
Standard Montauk Console

If I where going to make one from plywood and finish it with gelcoat I would consider building a second generation console (1977 - 1982)

Here are the images and dimensions of my standard third generation console. This is off a 1985 Standard (Montauk) Console on a 22 Outrage. The dimensions in Red are for the console and the ones in blue are for the plexi windshield.

Thanks Jeff...you were very thorough with those dimensions....i appreciate it.......i was thinking of building it with either a foam core or 1/4 to 1/2 inch marine ply encapsulated and glassed and then roll and tip it with Interlux perfection. Also i might go the way of sanding the hull fixing anything that needs to be done and painting it steel gray or a dark blue....want to be a bit different with my hull color. I have wanted a whaler 17 since i was a kid.....so my plans are to turn this into a head turner.....with your guys input i bet i will be able to do it...i'lll keep you guys posted!! cheers....and Dan....nice job on the deck!! Cool

Dan,
I did them in photoshop. I forgot all of the windshield dimensions so I will need to do them and repost.

reelhook,
No problem and good luck with the boat. Keep posting photos during your rebuild.

Hi there! I have a 1967 16/17. I just bought it this year. It came with a 2nd generation (76-82) counsel and it is perfect. Its not too far forward so there is a cooler seat and plenty of room in the bow. There is a early 90's reversible pilot seat and still room in the back of the bus for a cushioned seat with back rest. The back of the seat tilts forward on a spring and hinge when the motor tilts up. I went with a 2 stroke 90 because it only weigh's 305lbs. I wanted 4 stroke but a 90 ways 400 lbs and thats too much. I have a friend who has a 16/17 with a 90 4 stroke and it sits much too low in the water at the rear, he regrets the purchase. I did remove the counsel and re-mount with new wood and fasteners so I dont have to worry in waves when people are holding on, I epoxied the old (open) holes and then was able to easily screw it back in to the wood planking in the floor. I reccomend downloading the wood scemetics from this site for re-fastening stuff, they help A LOT.

I'm a yacht designer by trade and wanted to redesign the original console ...after a ton of sketches and overlays i decided to replicate the original and tweak that to my "custom" likeing.....i guess the old way is the way to go....somehow it just makes it look good........i am planning on havinf the steering wheel mounted on a teak pad.........now if i can only get someone to replicate the railing!!!! the console railing adds a ton of more appeal to the whole boatPfft
