Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: nauset console question

I was wondering if anyone out in cyber world is familiar with the nauset console. I'm trying to figure out why the lower console is notched on the stern end. I can't for the life of me figure it out from the plans downloaded from this site. My best guess is it is somehow useful for the stern seat installation. Even then I don't know why. I wonder why it's not just square.

Also on the plans it says on many of the parts, see assembly drawing 11-14 or 11-15. Anyone know what or where I could find these?

Any thoughts or ideas or even better, definitive answers would be greatly appreciated.

sawdusty,

I am not that familiar with the console itself and cannot even find the "notch" you are referring to.
Which page is the notch on?
There are 39 pages.... Please let us now what page you are referring to.

Whatever this notch is, it should have nothing to do with the stern seat, nor the pilot seat for that matter. Could it have something to do with a shelf or the forward platform?

Hopefully some of the experts here that own the Nauset model can tell us more.

Hey thanks for looking.

I'm refering to page 23 and 17. 23 is the one dimentional side cut out drawing and I'm wondering about the 10 1/4" "notch" toward the front of the boat. Page 23 is the 3d assemble drawing where you can see it somewhat assembled.

All the pictures of consoles I can find don't show this area.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

sawdusty,

Take a look a page number 1....
Look at the bottom right of this page and you will see a "Special Note".
This note says for consoles without the front seat or bow platforms.
I believe the notch is there for the front seat or bow platform. It looks like a filler piece goes in there.

Again, I am not positive as I have not owned a Nauset nor have I built one of these consoles.

Where are those Nauset owners when you need them....?? :)

I just wish I had my Dig. Camera........ Maybe I could help...

But I think Joe is right ...... either the seat or the platform...B)

guess I'll just cut it out the way it says and cover it up if it's ugly with a filler and trim piece.

Anyone out there make the windows?

Sawdusty,
Before you cut something you might not need, let me review the plans you describe for the notch in question...
My '63 Nauset is original and should provide the info you need...
Give me a day or two to figger out your design conundrum....

Ok, I'll do that.

If you happen to have a digital camera, I would love a few detailed photos of the console. Inside and out. I would prefer it to be as close to original as possible.

Thanks Dan

Sawdusty,
A lot of that work has already been done...
Check out the Personal Pages of BackRiveEexpress...
Andrews' 1967 Nauset Project...my Two 63's....and the Nauset to Drool On ...66 Nauset...gourgeous boat!
I downloaded the console drawings , 17 & 23, and though rough to see ...
The elevation of the Lower Console side shows the 10-1/4 notch and the 1-1/8 notch on the leading edge of the piece ( both sides)...
Now refer to the other drawing, Lower Console Assembly.
You'll see the "cut aways" on the 2 leading edges of the assembly drawing that illustrates the interior structure "posts" if you will...that tie the various panels together. It's basically 2 chunks of mahogany glued and screwed together...looks like part # 12-402-7...but I can't be sure without my glasses...
When you attach panel 12-402-6 to it it exposes the post to act as a "post" to attach the front seat support bracket and my guess is the bench itself...
The seat then gets attached to the frame of the console...not the box...
Where do I find a drawing of the front bench?
I'll betcha ten dollars to a donut!... that that front bench support has a 10-1/4 tall, 1-1/2 inch deep projection coming off it....!
I dunno for sure...never had to take it off or repair it....
I'll make your windows for you...but it looks like whole windshield assembly...not just frames....

Wow, those are really some nice, nice boats! Thank you for pointing them out.

It all seems like it should make sense, but the thing I can't get by is that the cut away is 1 1/2 deep and the post is 1" square. How do I fasten the bottom side panel to the cleat when the panel only touches the cleat above the 10" cut out?

I think I'm missing something here, I'm sure of it, just can't figure it out....yet

sawsusty,

You might do as danedg originally suggested.
Don't cut the notch out at first. You can always to it later.

Cut the pieces you need and do a lay up of the pieces. Clamp them together and see how everything fits and what it looks like to you.

If you don't need the notches, then you are safe. If you do need the notches, then you can just un-clamp the pieces and cut the notches.

I made a mock-up of the Rod Holder Boxes as a pattern. I was able to screw the pieces together using the holes that were in the original location. Once I checked the fit and how things were supposed to go together, I was able to just unscrew the pieces and change anything I needed.
Just a thought.

Sawdusty,
Page 1 shows the front seat assembly (with no detail) that fits into the 10-1/4 x 1-1/2 notch on the lower console assembly. It also shows a special note for Whalers without front benches (Sakonnet), to provide a piece of solid 3/4 solid mahogany that fills the notch.
Now...check out Page #25. I believe THAT is the cleat used in the forward corners of the lower console. It's 2" wide...and has 3 countersunk holes for attaching the front bench support...looks like mahogany ply.
I haven't had time to study all the other cleats illustrated, but bear in mind the ALL seams/corners/joints are backed up by some cleat or other throughout...
More importantly, the upper console fits OVER the lower unit, not ON it, and extends down 1-1/8 ", thus the upper notch...check out Pg. 1 again...the inside lower edges of the upper console are backed up by mahogany cleats...they're secured by the stainless screws shown. THOSE cleats are then screwed from the inside of the lower unit to secure the upper to the lower console assemblies....
So there! Have I confused you enough yet?...
Tonight I'll produce a CAD drawing the will illustrate the assemblies easier than the originals...
You still haven't answered my question...what happened to the original?
Dan
If my boat wasn't in storage I could take some fresh fotos of the setup...but we'll work this out...

Dan,

Thank you for your research. I just recently (an hour ago) figured out what the plywood cleat was for, -o8 I believe. I have it pretty well figured out. The cad drawing would be nice and could help if I'm reading anything wrong, but it would certainly be above and beyond the call of duty. It may be helpful to many down the road though.

As far as the original goes, I have no idea.:o

Sawdusty,
On my boat, the windshield joinery is a LOT more complicated than it appears, which doesn't seem to be illustrated in the drawings...
[img] [/img]
Hopefully I've transferred this image that shows that all windshield frames (4) are made of 4 seperate pieces...
Each section follows the grain around the frame resulting in a MUCH stronger assembly...
Maybe you could send me your email...I'm largely unsuccessful posting fotos on these threads....(Joe I still can't figger out what I'm doin' wrong)
Dan
