I would like to use my mid to late 1970's Johnson 6 as a kicker to compliment my Johnson 90 on my '87 Montauk 17 however it has a shorter shaft as it was intended for use on our litlle john boat. I have been told of the adapter mounts available for these applications and would value the opinions and any pros or cons from those who have knowledge of this scenario. Thanks, Darren

I have the same scenario. My Johnson mechanic is
getting an extension kit for me which is essentially
adding a 5" spacer housing and using a 20" shaft.
He tells me that the 20" shaft models came with
this spacer already in from the factory. It has to
be a 20" shaft to work with the Montauk and be
able to just hang onto the transom.

Most people including myself hate those adjustable brackets.
They are a real pain.

On a Classic Montauk, you want to mount the Long Shaft engine directly on the transom with no bracket. This is how Boston Whaler recommended it to be mounted. This also keeps the power head high and dry.

I have modified short shaft engines to long shaft engines before. It is pretty easy to do. That being said, it is a way better deal to buy a long shaft engine, than it is to buy a short shaft, then covert to long shaft.
