I once saw a trolling motor that was mounted under the rail of a 17' Montauk and would slide out before going down.
I would like to keep rails of my Montauk 190 for grandchildren safety but would also like a trolling motor on my Montauk 190.
Does anyone have any ideas about this? Any help would be appreciated.

Mine is done that way on my Montauk. I am not familiar with the mounting area on your boat but with a few looks around the site there are some really good ways to do it. I liked keeping the rails as I spend a lot of time up there and like something to grab a hold of. Take a look at my project page for some pics of how I did mine.
Good luck.

My trolling motor works that way. Look at my personal page. I pull the motor out, tilt it vertical and lock it in the full up position while it's still on the trailer. In the water I just pull it straight down or up as required. After it's back on the trailer I lay it horizontal and strap it down. It's a minor inconvenience but well worth it to save the rail.

By going to www.whalerparts.com, you can see the diagram showing where the phenolic (sic) backing areas are for mounting for your model.
Here is the pdf link

The previous responses are for a Montauk 17 which is the older style with a different rail. I have have a Montauk 170 which is similiar in design to your 190. I couldn't figure out how to put a trolling motor on the bow so I put a bracket on the stern. It works great for a trolling motor and a kicker.
The mount is a Garelick. It's shown on my personal page near the bottom.
