Can anyone tell me how the engine reverse locks works? My doesn't lock when the shifter is in full reverse with the engine off. Please help! I have two service manuals and can't for my life find any reference to it. Maybe I don't know the right terminology.

James, once the engine is in gear it should be harder to turn because of the compression of the motor. But it does not "lock" this is true if the motor is in forward gear or reverse. The prop should only spin freely when in neutral. If you are turning it from the flywheel it is easier to turn over the motor because you do not have to deal with the gears in the lower unit. If you want to stop the prop from turning in order to remove the prop nut then place a block of wood 2x4 or 4x4 between the side of the prop blade and the cavitation plate.

He's saying the reverse won't lock when the engine is not running. I would check your cables and linkage.
