Have you guys seen this yet? Apparently John Mirassou is going to make another trip in his 17 ft Montauk around the east coast and televised on the Discovery Channel.

Did they do it already or did they just get some shots for this trailer to sell the idea?

If they haven't done it yet - how cool would it be to see them?

Jguini8, I'm not sure when it's going to air.

Matt, what's up with your avatar?? I am not sure when thy are going to start filming. This time they are starting in Key West instead of Fort Lauderdale. The only information I know is from the You Tube comments.

Avatar = That's a reflection off the water me taking a shot off the bow at about 30mph.

I guess they're going to do it this Summer. Now we know why John M was on here asking about repowering. Would love to take my Montauk over to the SC coast and buy the guys a round of beers.

I loved the book. I would like to meet those guys in person.

It looks like they have already started the trip, but of course that could just be a setup for the series. I just hope that they have not passed our area already. There is a great story in the book about them stopping at the Golden Isles Marina, so maybe they will stop by again. I would really like to follow them up the ICW for a while.

Matt, ahhhhh....now I know what that is and recognize it.

If you'll notice in the video, he has a new Evinrude Etec on his Whaler.

Cliff, thanks for pointing this out to us in this thread. I can't wait to watch. I love being able to watch something positive once in awhile to get away from the negative things all around us in life. What could be more positive than friends in a Whaler?!

Surprised I'd never heard of this book on WC. I ordered my copy today. Will be looking forward to updates on their 2nd time around. I had a thought about a similar trip just last night....Gotta get those lottery numbers right 1st.

I gues John was pulling my leg when he said I could tag along for the next trip...:)

Very cool. I'm looking forward to a second book!

I hope they have a great second trip, but I don't see how it could live up to the first trip. Part of the magic was their youth. I'll definitely watch the show if it's available in my area.

I'm surprised we havent heard more about the second trip before it started. I would have thought that John would have hyped it up on this site.
It would be nice to meet him in NYC when he comes through.
What a great book and a great story!!!!

Hey Everyone:

Apparently the word is out. Here's the skinny (as of today). A guy who makes television shows read the book loved it and approached me about developing a series. We have been working on the project for over a year now. The first footage, with me in The Whaler in Redondo Beach and my wife, etc., was filmed in April of last year. Cameron and Bertsch joined us in July and we filmed a day with them. Frank the TV guy took 30 hours worth of footage and created the Sizzle Reel, as it is so-called.

We've been pitching the Sizzle to different production companies and television networks. We had some success in early February when the William Morris Agency here in L.A. showed a lot of interest. However, they want more tension and drama.

We sat and had a heart to heart and decided foundation of the show is strong: In search of the American Spirit. We also realized three mid 40 something guys climbing back into a Montauk to travel 6800 miles (we are going to start in Key West and make the run to Boston) will have plenty of tension and drama. "Can they survive the elements, can they survive each other."

Frank the TV guy is in the process of shortening the existing Sizzle and adding the tension and drama. We are still holding out hope for summer 2010 but we are quickly runnng out of time. If not we're lookign at 2011.

I'll keep you posted, particularly when the new Sizzle is released.

Thanks for all the interest and support
John Mirassou

Wow, great ideas. I wonder if whaler would get involved as a sponser. Seems to me its a perfect feel good PR story that they need in this economy. Thanks for the update John. I think its time to refresh my memory and read the book again.
Im sure everyone on this site will have some great ideas for the name of the show aside from "Only in America" LOL

Since the post on Whaler Central, views of the Sizzle Reel on YouTube have skyrocketed. With so many views, we receive the demographics of who is watching the video. 36% of the viewers are mailes 24 - 48 years old. To be expected. Another 30 odd percent are misc. The next biggest demographic are girls 18-24. Go figure.

My Dad asked me why I thought this particular demographic liked the Sizzle Reel. My response: "I can't figure out women my own age and now you want me to try and figure out why an 18-24 year old female is doing something or another?"

Waiting to sit down with a glass of wine before I tell the wife about this one. Of course, I know her response will be something like "Ha, you trying to flirt with some 23 year old girl, now that's entertainment."

Thanks again everyone for the positive responses.

John

Kudos to WhalerCentral: The Only In America video on YouTube has approximately 110 views until someone posts the the link on WhalerCentral, six days later the video surpasses 1,000 views. Wow!

John this would be a great History or Discovery channel series. Perhaps a mini Whaler regattas along the way at selected spots would add some interesting twists, kind of like a Harley ride...:-) I will read you book on my next vacation.

Good luck

John,
I just ordered my copy of the book to read on the whaler when the fish aren't biting this summer. I like Jon's idea of having local whalers meet you along the way. Might make the trip more than just a redo of the origin.

Absolutely, Whaler's joining us along the way is part of the plan. The first big flotilla however, at least as of now, will navigate the Potomac to DC to meet the President. Nothing politcal, simply: "We're all Americans. It's an amazing country, Best of luck!"

I hope you are able to make the trip this year. I would love to join in as you pass thru Chicago. And if you need a slip here in the Windy City for a few days you may certainly use mine!

Hi John, will President Obama really meet you and the group? Check out my photography project with letters spelling O-B-A-M-A. http://www.worldofwagner.com I still have the letters. The could make a good photo op.

Wow, using those letters would MOST CERTAINLY turn this into a political photo op and take away from the true meaning of "We're all Americans. It's an amazing country, Best of luck!".

With the huge letters spelling out Obama, that takes away from "America" and places the emphasis on Obama, and thats political. If the letters U.S.A were in the background, instead of O.B.A.M.A., then the focus would be more on America instead of it's president.

I don't think it would be political to hold up the letters if the group is actually meeting the President. He's not running for re-election. And he might get a kick out of seeing the letters.

OIA- John, I am in the middle of your book right now, just out of the Erie Canal, and loving the adventure. Thanks for signing the book you sent. Looking forward to more adventure and the TV series could be very meaningful to all of us. Vince in Coronado.

John,

looking forward to getting my copy.

The ride up the Potomac would be beautiful, lots of history on that river. I do all of my boating on the Potomac and it would be great to join you for the ride.

Kamie, I have the distance from the Chesapeake to DC at 160 statue miles, is this the case?

If we have enough Whalers perhaps we can have each boat hold UP a letter. UP FOR A BOAT RIDE MR. PRES? HOWS THE WIFE AND KIDS, PLEASE HAVE THEM COME ALONG AS WELL. WATERS FLAT, THE DAY IS WARM, COME AND ENJOY A LITTLE WHALERING. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Secret service would have a time with this one.

John,

All my charts are at the other house, but I belive it's 100 miles. As for the Secret Service, I am sure they would hop on the Fire or Police boats, which the last one I saw on the river had tripple 200/250 HP so catching a whaler would be no issue.

OIA...ya'll get into Southport, NC, come to the Old Yacht Basin and find a little southern hospitality. There's an 87 Montauk w/Red canvas called A Little Madness in a slip there and we're right up the hill in a little green cottage. Reply here or send an e-mail with estimated arrival date. If we've missed ya, well have a great (and safe) trip.

Hey Shnells:

Thanks for the invite. I will let you know how things progress and we will see in NC.

Only In America part 2 is really taking off. They've recently completed a test trip to Sacremento and have made several video trailers. Here's the link to the YouTube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ffb7T0...re=related

And here's the link to Johns Only in America website where the article from the Sacramento Bee published an article about them. Also there's a few links to their trip here too.
