So, after going over a new ('96) short shaft 30 hp Johnson this winter, including installing a new water pump, I finally got a chance to mount it on my 13 Sport and start it up. The motor ran fine for the five minutes I had to test it before I was called away to other obligations, except that no water came out of the discharge tube. My question is, should water always be coming out of the discharge tube while it is running? The manual says running the pump "dry" for even a few seconds can ruin the impeller, and I'd rather do the repair now before I put time into hooking up all controls and electrics. Help out a greenhorn please.

Water should always come out of the tell tale tube.
Check the tube for blockage.

Yes, just a few seconds can ruin the pump impeller. And as Joe said, there should always be a tell-tale stream. I'd disassemble it and check the impeller. If you had water to it the whole time, it may be good. There is a specific way you must get the impeller vanes installed or it may not pump correctly. But more likely, it's a blockage somewhere.
