How do you take a 1997 Johnson 90 out of S.L.O.W. mode?

what is slow mode? as you push the throttle forward you leave neutral and into forward gear. the further you push the throttle the rps go up.

Slow Mode is a protection for the engine but I don't know how to reset it as I have never had to reset my prior Motor with it.

Do you have the manual for your engine?

I think all you need to do is shut down the motor for awhile.
If the problem was with overheating, then let it cool, fix the problem, and then restart.
Restarting should reset the Slow Mode unless something else is still not working properly.

oh ok like dropping a couple of cylinders out. I am with Joe, if it should only be in that mode if a problem is detected.

It should drop out of S.L.O.W. mode when you stop and restart the motor. If it isn't, you still have the problem that caused you to go into S.L.O.W. mode.

On some of the older Johnson motors you can run them in reverse for a short period of time and it would kick them out of slow mode.

It was my throttle linkage that connects the carbs together so they open in unison.

I had a bad Thermostat 2 summers ago and the engine went into "S.L.O.W." Mode (2004 Johnson 50 hp). After removing the broken thermostat with a friend, we took her out for a ride, the engine remained in "SLOW MODE" for a good 20 minutes, despite going into reverse, shutting down and re-starting, etc.. I had given it up to the "OUTBOARD" God and planned on a 2nd job to get this repaired, and pay the bill. I got back to the dock and the engine all of a sudden got "Frisky" again, I took her out for a ride and "BAM" right outta "SLOW MODE", and ready to "ROCK", we replaced the broken "stat" and the engine ran great. I posted this to say that "I don't know what I did to take it out of S.L.O.W MODE", it just did it by itself when it wanted to (possibly after detecting that the engine cooled down). I though that 20 minutes was a long time for a running engine with a "working" water pump to cool down.

There is no "getting out" of SLOW mode. The motor will run normally as soon as the overheat problem is taken care of. Remember that your motor will only go into SLOW if there is an overheat.

The red TEMP light will come on if the motor gets too hot.

If there are no lights and the motor still doesn't have any power, then there is either a fuel problem or an ignition problem that is keeping the motor at reduced speeds. There is also the possibility of a linkage or carb throttle shaft not allowing full throttle.

A trained mechanic or by following the service manual and using the correct procedures and tools, the problem can be found and repaired.

A powerpack breaking down after running a while, then suddenly working fine is not unheard of.
