I"m thinking of repowering the old ribbed,currently powered by 1985 140 rude,this old motor needs work,do I dump money in it ?repower with reman. or look for used . I cannot afford a new one,next 175 or the max 200 hp,does anyone know the preformance benefits? Just need help making up my mind.Jim

I have a BUNCH of rolling stock. Whether replace with new or rebuild is always a cost issue for me.
Past couple years, probably mainly because of more and more internet advertizing avail, I have found low hour used engines OR OEM recons are the most cost effective mainly because I never have time to wait in line for the rebuilder.

Using the web a guy can almost consider out of warrantee worn out engines throwaways and search, buy another. Seems a lot of gas misers are swapping out decent carbed low hour engines while they still have some value and replacing them with new. Hey, if I could afford it, I probably would too. But, Im not sold on 6 year warrantees that require 3 or 4 tuneups a year unless they included demarriage.

I was able to buy 3 good used engines for less than the price of one new with the same HP. Thus, I ended up with a running spare. OK, carbed gas hogs but gas is not an issue for my needs.
if one goes bang, if its something simple I exchange and take my time fixing it and the boat has MINIMAL down time. If its major, I part it out and buy another one when the right deal presents itself...I might even have it rebuilt, but you see, the boat never incures substantial downtime which is the most important thing of all for me.
Boating days, fishing seasons in the NW are too rare to risk missing because you cant get a shop to fix your engine.
I think this kicks a 6 year warrantees ass.
Tho, I do have a boom truck that expedites the exchanges.

Somebody here certainly knows more about the mechanical aspects than I do.
