Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Help me identify this Whaler?

Someone near me has a nice 1972 Boston Whaler for sale. It is 16' 7" in length. It has three mahogany boards or planks for seats. It has a wooden side control panel with a couple of dials and some switches. It is driven by a 35HP Johnson 3 cylinder outboard, tiller steered. It has no steering wheel. Any idea what model this could be? He is asking $4800 for it, with the trailer. Is that reasonable?

It sounds like a basic 16/17 hull with a custom interior and a way small outboard. Since you say it's tiller steered, probably a work boat, as most of the crab fisherman around me use tillers to get in close, especially when they are fishing solo.
Look at the model specs, if you want to turn it into any of the 16/17 models pictured it will be a lot of work and a lot of $$$ If you want a blank slate, sounds like you found it, but I would really check the hull. As for the price, a bit high for what you would be getting.

Actually, that is a 1971 or earlier bare hull with a custom interior. By 1972 the interiors were Desert Tan not blue.
Back then, Whaler touted the fact you could buy a bare hull and fit it out however you wanted to. They even devoted a page in their catalogs showing some customer's specialized interiors.
$4800 seems high to me, and 35 HP is at the extreme low end of adequate power but it's worth whatever you want to pay for it.

It is also very possible that was originally a Currituck model that somebody removed the steering console from and added the double front thwart seat.

I guess its not really a collectors boat, but just a nice looking fishing boat. How do you go about guessing at a value? I havent seen too many similar boats.

Do you think upon visual inspection, $3000 might be reasonable? He says that the hull is in excellent condition and the gel coat is solid.
