Friends-

I have a 1984 Montauk which I have used regualrly for the 18 years I have had it. Five years ago I replaced the steering cable when it broke. This weekend the steering mechanism locked on occasion. I suspect it needs replacement. Can anyone direct me to a site where I might find out about the parts for such a system? George Mills

George,

The steering system in your 1984 Montauk is a mechanical system made by Teleflex. You can visit their web site:

http://www.teleflexmarine.com/

The system as a package is very reasonably priced. I can buy the entire Safe-T QC kit for as little as $115. I suggest you replace the entire thing and start fresh.

I go through a steering cable about every 3-4 seasons, on the 15' sport, the backsplash, and low profile to the water eats them up, it's reg. maint. on the "sport" for me, I have found that a few shots of grease every two weeks in the engine tilt tube, and pivot tube, greatly reduced occassional steering "lock up". Salt tends to get into the grease jacket, dry up and expand causing "lock up".
