My 1979 17' Montauk dash is covered in some sort of vinyl which needs to be replaced. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I may acquire replacement material?
Thanks!

I didn't think they had vinyl on them. Maybe its aftermarket. See link for classic OEM consoles. http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...icle_id=58

I don't remember the details but Tom or Joe can correct me. The OEM material is no longer available.

Some members have sourced a replacement from a sign maker who uses vinyl.

Others have removed it completely and buffed out the gel coat underneath.

modenacart,

Great catch on the photos and I'm going to have to add a description because the original consoles do have the vinyl material. 3 of the consoles in those photos are of my consoles which I removed the vinyl material.

I believe a replacement material is made by Mac-Tac or something like that.
I can't seem to find the link right now. I'll see if I can find it unless someone posts back here first.

The vinyl on my 1990 22' Revenge was destroyed from years in the sun. I did not replace it because I didn't want the vinyl acting like an "oven" on a summer day. Buffed it out and called it good.

The vinyl that Whaler used had a subtle texture and was called Mat-Tac or something similar. As noted above, it does not seem to still be available but other flat black vinyl materials are readily available and easy to install.

I always hate seeing those consoles with the vinyl stripped off. They just look a little naked and the material is there to reduce glare which it does well.

Oh, removing the vinyl is an easy way out, but for the Whaler purest, you want the vinyl in there.

Just go to any sign shop and buy a piece of 3M flat black sign vinyl. It will not cost more than a few dollars.

All the Montauk and Outrage standard consoles had this material on the dash EXCEPT the original "winged" consoles used from 1973-1977.

I have looked everywhere for that material and was never able to find it. I took it all off. On my outrage, I used a piece of mahogany and put 7 coats of marine varnish on it. It looks better that the vinyl ever did!

Thanks to all for the information. I'll head to a sign store tomorrow.
