Gents,

My father and I own a 1984 Outrage 22'. It is about 80% original, we put a T-Top on it, repowered it twice and it has a leaning post versus the original chairs. I really would like something with two motors to get a little offshore (SC Coast) and dad wants to put a four stroke on it and keep it up. The boat does not get as much TLC as an '84 needs. What would an '84 22' Outrage be worth? If we re-powered, again, what would you suggest?

I bought a 1988 22ft outrage with 1988 225hp johnson, 1988 25hp kicker, t-top in georgetown,sc about a year and half ago for $9000. I removed three layers of bottom paint to get back to original gelcoat, repowered with 225hp Yamaha four stroke, new steering, added washdown, trim tabs, new t-top cover, leaning post and cooler cushions. Sold 1988 225hp johnson for $1000. I probably have about $30,000 in my new 1988 outrage.

You will never get your money out repowering and selling right away. Sell it like it is. It's worth $1000, and I will come get it tomorrow.

I'm definately not the pro here, but my take is keep it and repower it as you suggested with the twins and not a single 4 stroke. The entire reason for having twins is if you have motor issues you have a back up. I have two 22's and plan on having one finished this year and on the for sale block and then getting serious about getting a 25 CC to do the same as you, go offshore "Gulf" with twin motors. Spend a little more time with the TLC as they are fantastic boats, and i'm amazed how dry i stay even in big swells.

I don't think a 22' boat needs twins. Twice the maintenence. Nice two stroke or four stroke gets my bid.

Normally i would agree, but as he mentioned one of the things he wishes to do is go offshore, and even though i've been 50 miles out on one engine, i sure would have felt better with 2 slung back there. A motors a motor a motor. True, twice the maintenance, but also twice the piece of mind. :)
Another thing to consider, is how little maintenance the new motors need. The new ETEC's are once every 3 years!

I agree with Duf, with twin engines, one will get you home if you are 50 miles offshore. Engines, like anything manmade, can break. All it takes is one problem on a single motor, 50 miles out, to raise the hair on the back of your neck.

your not kidding about raising the hair on your neck. When i go way out, always go with my neighbor and he takes his 27 fter, i take my Whaler so we have two motors between us. But when i just go to the rigs, which are only 10 miles out, i go alone with a fishing buddy, and i never turn the motor off, even though its not that far offshore. Just dreading to hear that "click click click" when i try to restart it, though its never happened to me with the ETEC. However i was out there once when i was having that over temping issue, and it was a sickly feeling when the motor shut itself down to an idle.

Harley, your being cheap, make it $1010.00 and jump in with both feet. :)
