I think I have a 1971 16-7 ft katama i love the older look but still want reliability. Can I get that out of an older motor, if so what hp and brand. thks frank

Guys like Binkie runs older motors and swear by them. If it is the nostalgic look your after, I would recommend finding an older motor that was used in fresh water. There are plenty of parts still out there for the older motors. Here is a link to an antique motor club http://www.aomci.org/

Wait a minute! I`m running an '08 25hp Merc/Tohatsu on my 13 footer, that I use for fishing cruising/whatever. I only running the older motors at the AOMCI meets. Older motors may be, or maybe not reliable, depends on the way they were taken care of. But they all are thirsty for gas, that's for sure.

I love the older "Mail Box" motors. I agree that you need to purchase a motor that has been used on fresh water lakes. I buy my older motors on ebay. I try to find ones from Mich, Wisn area. If you look at my personal page, the Ole Evinrude 40HP was purchased for $107 dollars and runs like a top. Shipping was cheap too....only $168.00 to my door step. All she needs is a nice paint job...which I hope to start on soon.

They do suck the fuel down....but not too bad. Properly tuned and maintained....they'll run for many years with no problems. Most parts are still available...plenty of parts on ebay also. Easy to work on yourself too.

I like the look of the old motors on older BW's. Keep'em they way they were back in the day
