Where I should look for the Stenciled Number when I start sanding. It's a 1958 Sport 13. Was it engraved in? Painted? Where should I look? Thanks again to all the experts!

No HIN, to find the stencil number, start in the anchor locker, either the floor or the inside walls. if it's not there, move to inside the transom. You can also look on your title, if you got one, they often used it for identification before the had HIN's

OK thanks for the response ! I read the link. What exactly is a "stencil" in gelcoat. Is it like paint ? Enscribed ? Will I find it when I start sanding. Sorry for the newbe questions. Again I appriciate all your help !

Yours should be on the inside of the rear transom directly below the engine and on the centerline or could also be in the bow locker.

Also just curious. How do you know it is a 1958 model if you don't have the Stencil Number?

The prevoius owner found a N.Y. reg from 1958. I currently hold paper work with a year of 1959. I would like to find out for sure. The last owner is searching paperwork for me. Thanks so much !!!

Joe -- Your example of the black Stenciled Number is not on a blue hulled Whaler; it is a 19 footer which has a Desert Tan or Outrage Grey interior.

Blue hulled Whalers had the Stenciled Number in White.

On the very early 13s it was sometimes in the bottom of the bow locker.

The Stenciled Number is gelcoated onto the mold before the hull is laid up. It thus appears to be cast into the hull; it does not sit on top of the surface of it. Even if the hull is painted over, the paint can be removed and the Stenciled Number will still be there.

I agree, but digital photos can be very deceiving. I am also unaware of any 19 foot Whaler ever being made with a blue interior.

Here is another example of a 1964 which appears to be in the bow locker and the gelcoat appears to be sorta painted whiteish.....

DISCLAIMER:
The above are only examples of various stencil numbers. The condition of the paint and the color of paint and or stencil numbers may not look correct due to various conditions of the boat and if the boat may or may not have been repainted or sat out in the sun for 30 years without a cover. The stencil number may not be the exact same type of stencil that might be found in YOUR Whaler.....

Yeah Joe, I think we get it. My point was simply that if a 13 or 16 foot Whaler has a blue interior, it will have a WHITE Stenciled Number, not Black. Likewise, Desert Tan Whalers have BLACK Stenciled Numbers.

Your three examples are good and point out a few differences over the years:

The 1964 has the Stenciled Number in the bottom of the bow locker and the Sprue Hole on the foredeck.

The 1966 has the Stenciled Number on the inside of the transom in the splashwell below the motor and the Sprue Hole on the foredeck.

The 1970 has the Stenciled Number on the inside of the transom in the splashwell below the motor and the Sprue Hole in the bottom of the bow locker.

I suggest davbro look in the bottom of his bow locker for the Stenciled Number.

Paperwork can be inaccurate and confusing at times.

If the paperwork is dated 1959 then that would be completely different from some paperwork that is dated 1980 but says the model is a 1959. Big difference in paperwork in that case.

Numbers on the boat usually don't lie.
The stencil number should tell you what you really need to know.

Another scenario would be that I have a boat that has NO numbers on it at all but the paperwork says 1959....
The boat could have been a much newer model, stolen, repainted, numbers removed, etc., but the paperwork would not really tell the story of the actual boat in hand.
Who's boat and what year is it really?
This is just an example and hopefully nothing like this is the case with your boat.

Hi all,

My 13' Sport was registered as a 1971 model, but while stripping the interior paint I uncovered the HIN (5043) in the bow locker. Checked with Chuck at Boston Whaler and he informed me it was a 1962.

Right in the bottom center of the anchor locker on top of the sprue plug.

I also found mine in the Bow locker, it was in the center of the floor closer to the center drain. Unless someone purposely removed it, it can be found.

also look in the drain plug area that's where mine was found.I used a fiberglass paint stripper this can be gotten at an auto body supply house. Boston whaler said the numbers could be placed just about anywhere
