i recently purchased a 17' montauk (1971) that was painted inside and out. not sure if it was gelcoat or not. #1 how can I tell if it was gelcoated and #2 if I am trailering the boat will this paint job last a while if it is not gelcoated? thanks in advance for your responses

No exactly sure which earlier model you have as the Montauk model was not produced until 1973.

Good question about the paint/gelcoat... How do you tell the difference between paint and gelcoat?
Some paint looks just like gelcoat. Maybe other experts here can give us a little more insight on how to tell just by looking.
I wouldn't worry about it one way or the other, just use the boat and enjoy it.
If the paint comes off when trailering, then it obviously wasn't a good paint job.

I think the best option would be to contact the person you bought it from. Tell them you got a scratch on it and you are not sure how to fix it. If it was painted be sure to ask for the manufacturer, brand name and color number. It will be very useful information in the future.
