I'm new to this site, but really enjoy it so far. I recently inherited a 1989 Montauk and have some work ahead of me to clean it up. I've read through several posts regarding cleaning black spots, rust marks, etc off the decking. I'm thinking of trying the Barkeeper's Friend, but do I need to worry about damaging the finish (if there is any), or should I use an actual boat cleaner? I tried regular carwash with a stiff nylon brush and it got it a little cleaner, but it needs something more agressive to get the little black marks and junk off. Any other suggestions or should I just go for it? Thanks!

I used Simple Green and a stiff brush to remove black marks from my Outrage. It also removed the messily applied Teak oil from the fiberglass.

NWMONTAUK , The best thing Ive found to remove rust has been a product called FSR . I got it a West Marine . Works great and just put it on let it soak and rince it off. Tried all the other stuff and it all work but this really does it for rust .

Depending on what the stain is, will determine what method will work best.....different surfaces will require different methods too........Start will a good all purpose cleaner and use thoroughly and then keep experimenting with other cleaners. You will find that time and persistance is going to be your best weapon. Set up a personal page and show all of us what you have.

I do the same as Chris.

I am getting some rust looking stains around my fuel tank (portable plastic in a 13' boat). I suppose these must be from trace metals in the fuel when it has been filled in the boat. Do any of you others have this problem. I suppose the FSR product mentioned here would help with these spots.

Thanks for the responses. So far, the Barkeeper's Friend is doing a great job of cleaning the deck. For the stubborn spots, those Magic eraser things are doing pretty good, althougth they don't last long. I tried Simple Green and id didn't do as good of job as the Barkeeper, probably because there isn't any sort of grittyness to it. Still a ton of work to do, about 1/2 way there.
