On the side of my 1965 Sport 13 are four metal plates, two on each side. Inside screw holes go thru the hull where the plates are. Can anyone tell me what was originally attached there? It looks like it came from Whaler this way and is not an add-on.

They are the backing plates for the side rails your boat used to have.

Can they be removed without too much damage Tom? I dont plan to put rails back on her.

I used a small screwdriver to pry them off. You can also try pushing them through from the inside. One of them had a bit of epoxy in it. I did not leave any marks although I was planning to refinish the hull anyway. My backing plates are corroded. They appear to be pot metal that was once chromed. Are yours in good condition?

My daughter`s 13 footer has similar backing plates that were an attachment for a dive ladder.
