hello all...just got my first whaler..very excited as my brother has 2 and I have had nothing but fun in the montauk that he owns.
Anyways I bought a 86 montauk/ 90 hp honda 4 stroke and dual axle easyloader trailer for 7000.00 cdn. From all my research it is a good deal.
I need several things and have several questions.
Is it possible or should I say smart to put a fuel tank under the center console as long as there is good ventilation ? Were the doors on the console teak originally? There are no seats in this boat...what were the original seats on this model?
Thanks , Daryl

Welcome aboard darylrl.
I would not even consider putting fuel tanks in the console area myself... Period...
The fuel tanks on a Montauk were located under the Reversible Pilot Seat (RPS).
Most Montauks had two (2) 12 gallon tanks under the RPS. Some people eventually put a Tempo or a Pate 27 gallon under the tank instead of the two 12 gallon tanks. I preferred the two 12 gallon tanks myself.
There are photos of the RPS in the Project Photo Gallery on this site.

There are also many more photos of the RPS on members boats here.
Take a look in the "Members Personal Pages" section and see what you can find.
Here is one of many Montauks in the Members Personal Page section.
Take a look at the RPS with the fuel tank underneath. In this case, the tank is a Pate.

Congratulation on the Montauk. I owned one for 15 years.

Daryl,
You have several choices on purchasing or acquiring and RPS.
1. I would look on eBay for a used one.
2. You can buy a new one from a Boston Whaler dealer for around $1200 to $1400 (ouch)
3. You can make your own from individual parts. Legs, seat, pivot arms, seat back.
There is a thread right now where a member has some legs for sale.
http://www.whalercentral.com/forum/vi...#post_3198
Here is what I believe I would do if I needed one.
1. Buy the legs from Tom W Clark in the post above
2. Purchase a new seat from Hall's Nautical
http://www.hallsnautical.com/index.htm/index.htm
3. I would then install the seat with the new or used legs. This will enable you to use the boat temporarily until you get the rest of the parts.
4. Buy a pair of 12 gallon Tempo Tanks from Bass Pro (you want #B)
Tempo 12 Gallon Tank
5. Then I would buy the Stainless Steel RPS Pivot Arms from Boston Whaler
6. Then I would either make, or have someone make, a new seat back from teak from the plans located on this site in the download section.

A Montauk is a great boat and deserves the original style equipment in my opinion.
The seat is a major part of a Montauk and the RPS is a great seating arrangement.
Here are more photos of an RPS in my Outrage 18'. The same RPS that is in a Montauk.

Good Luck and let us know what you end up doing.

Thanks Joe...your suggestions are much appreciated....I too believe this boat deserves to be the beauty that she originally was.
I am going to build new teak doors for the console. I will check out the links you listed...thanks again
Daryl:)
