My 1991 Outrage 17 is in the shop having its tired 1990 Mercury 115 de-rigged in preparation for a new 2010 E-Tec 115. I've been doing a lot of research on props and I think I have my initial choices narrowed down.

I've read a few installations for the same combo running the Viper 13-7/8" x 19" and getting very good top speed.

Another prop I've seen mentioned is the Stiletto Advantage I 13-1/4" x 17" for good hole shot and acceleration.

I use my boat mostly for fishing. I carry a removable 35 gallon live well when fishing and sometimes one passenger. I'm not terribly concerned with 45+ mph top speed and don't want to struggle to get on plane with a bit of a load. Running with the live well full is like carrying two other adults. Throw in a full tank of gas and my 220 pounds and we've got a decent load.

Any comments of suggestions would be appreciated.

What prop do you have on your Merc now and were you happy with it? I would try runnng that on the E-Tec before you do a lot of prop swapping. If your merc prop had a Flo-Torq hub you should be able to switch and use a Michigan Wheel XHS hub kit and install it on the Evinrude.

Either propeller will yield similar performance. I suspect the Stiletto will be the superior one based testing of those two props on a friend's Outrage 17 with an E-TEC 115 mounted on a Bob's Machine Shop jack plate.

If you do use the Stiletto, be sure the motor is mounted good and high, two or three holes up on the transom.

The Mercury was running a Lazer II 13 1/4" x 20" and performed well for my needs. Moved the boat with a light load to about 42 mph when trimmed out for max speed but I don't recall the rpm (I think around 5200-5300). It will be going with the motor to it's new owner.

Johnny -

My friend Bob (and maybe Tom's too) in Bellingham, WA runs a 13-7/8"-19 Viper on his 17" Outrage I, WOT is 48 MPH at 5600 RPMS with his 115 E-TEC.

I believe that is one of the setups I've read about. With the Bob's Machine Shop jack plate? Coincidentally, Bo's Machine Shop is only about a 15 minute drive from my house. Bob Icenogle (the owner) is a really nice guy. Several years ago he had one of his guys weld up a cracked ventilation plate on a motor I had that suffered a collision from another boat at the dock. Didn't charge me a penny.

I'm going with the 19" Viper off the bat. I'm just curious how it will do getting on plane with a decent load in the boat. I might try and get a 17" Stiletto Advantage I to try as well. The 20" Laser II that I ran on my Merc 115 was ventilated which really helps with the hole-shot so I'm not sure how that would compare to the 19" Viper. The Laser II did a great job.

Actually, Bob in Bellingham had a 19" Viper at first but sold it after trying a 17" Stiletto Advantage, which is what he uses now.

Any input on the performance differences between the two on his setup? The Stiletto is definitely less expensive so +1 for it.
