My 68 Nauset had a motor on it before I ended up with it. My Dad told me years ago that it was an Evinrude 85 hp but the only other thing he could tell me was that a mechanic told him it was one of the biggest gas hogs Evinrude made(he may have been right as my Dad always had four 6 gal tanks onboard. Can anybody give me a rough weight for an 85 HP Evinrude for the years around 1965-69. Thanks

I had a 1967 80hp V4 on my 1967 Nauset. It tipped the scales at a mere 247lbs.

Not sure who told you the new engines were lighter? The DI engines have components that the old carb'd engines didn't like separate injectors for each cyl, emm's, higher capacity electrical systems to handle the extra loads, all which add to weight. But compared to a 4 stroke that has additional valve train components, they're lighter.

That being said, you won't believe the performance differences between a new DI engine and an old carb'd 2 stroke. Even simple things like not having a choke or ever needing to use the fast idle are great.

PS The NADA guide only goes back to 1974 and lists the weight of that engine as 265 lbs.

You might want to look at this Quick Guide to Engine Choices/Weight

I think you will also find that many 16/17' Whalers with a 70hp or 90hp have two 12 gallon tanks for a total of 24 gallons.
Or, they have a single 24 or 27 gallon tank.
