I got an 89 evinrude. what are the alarms (beeping) that it can produce?

I know it has one for oil not getting to the motor - what does this sound like? - can it only come on when the engine is running?

What are the others? is overheating one?

My motor shut down while i was running the other day. i left it shut off for a few mins, then when i turned the key to the on position (before trying to start it) the alarm would constantly sound. 10 mins later, alarm stopped, i tried to start and it started up and got me home... close but scary..

any ideas.

The alarm for low oil in the tank is supposed to be an intermittent beep and not a steady tone, but sometimes the sender can malfunction and produce a constant beep. If you turn the key on with the engine cold, and get the constant horn (which is supposed to signal overheat) check the oil level in your tank first to see if that may be setting it off. Doesn't hurt to fill it anyway to see if that silences the alarm....

Well it sounds like that was my problem, but the motor slowed down abruptly then shut off completly before i heard this horn. it was after that when i tried to restart it that i heard the horn.

Any ideas on that?

Also, where are the thermostats on the engine, and how hard is it to replace them?

Your thermostats are located on the rear of the block, between the two cylinder banks and below your exhaust manifold. You will see two 3/4 inch hoses, one from each bank of the engine leading to the thermostat housing.

Same exact thing happened to me. I was runnin and the alarm sounded and stayed on. I looked back and saw the water pump was pumpin good and it turned out to be the thermostat. After putting a new one on the alarm sound as soon as i turned the key so i asked my mechanic about it and he said to disconect the battery and that would stop once i hook it back up and it did. Now she runs like a top once again

alright - ive found my thermostat housing, and ive found replacement parts.
is there anywhere i can see a 'how to' of changing them, or at least an assembly drawing?

It might be good to have a 'how to' for a lot of things for my engine. where can i get something like that?

I see there is a starter rope available for like $7. This seems like a good buy to back up the battery. Anyone ever tried it? hows it work? would it be a good buy?
