I have a 16.6 whaler with a 1985 70hp johnson. I am currently using a 13 3/4 X 15 prop.
The boat comes out of the hole great but not much top end. Turns 6000. Any suggestions on a prop that would give me more speed top end?

Thanks,
Don

Don, you bet.

I owned a 1978 Montauk 16' 7".... and a 1985 Evinrude 70 hp... Same basic engine as yours but with Evinrude decals.

I preferred the hole shot instead of top end so I used the standard OMC aluminum prop 13 3/4 x 15 pitch prop. Part # 391198.
The boat would do 30 to 31 mph...

I also had the standard OMC aluminum 13 1/4 x 17 pitch prop. Part # 391199. The boat would do 32 to 33 mph...

There are probably other props to try but generally you will give up hole shot for top end speed or visa versa no matter what brand or type of prop.
If you prefer top end speed then try a 17 pitch prop. Others here will probably recommend a specific brand...

Also make sure your engine height is correct on the transom, that'll give you a bit more top end as well as reduce drag on the hole shot....

Thanks for all the input. Think I'll try the 17 wheel and see how it goes.
