Anybody know anything good or bad about Tohatsu? Some say they are workhorses, owned by Nissan, and the company is sub-contracted to make all Mercury outboards under 30hp -- and a few of the big hps as well. Others say they're after-market newcomers. I have the opportunity to buy a very lightly used 2008 115hp still under warranty for less than half the price of a new one (they go for about 10k installed). The owner wants more power on his boat and wants to sell this one. there are several authorized dealers in my area who can service it. Thoughts please...

I don't know for sure which makes which, but I have a Nissan 40 hp tldi (injected) and it is a great motor. My dealer sells them and the identical Merc and he never sees them again.
Great running motor and very fuel efficient.

My nephew runs a 80's 15 hp and is mechanically savy. He reports they are very well made and reliable.
I would go for that engine, if I was in your shoes.

I have a friend who is a Tohatsu dealer. He said Tohatsu makes all engines for Nissan and Merc (under 40hp)

Slightly twisted statement, Tohatsu is the company. Mercurys 30 hp and under and all Nissan's are just re badged Tohatsus. with different looks and colors. I really like my 25hp Merc. /Tohatsu 4 stroke EFI, It is a civilized outboard. Also Tohatsu has made big inroads into outboard boat racing.
Here is some history on Tohatsu. Been around sine 1922, first outboard 1956

They are the second largest producer of outboards in the world and a leader in innovative design with the environmentally conscious TLDI series of Two-stroke Low pressure Direct Injection, DFI, outboards that meet current EPA regulations for the U.S. Mercury outboards, in the U.S., from 30 hp and below are rebadged Tohatsu's.
