REQUIRED ON ALL VESSEL'S UNDER 21 FEET: This mean's Motorboats, Sailboats, Kayaks, Canoe's, and Paddleboats, Persons MUST WEAR A LIFE JACKET from Nov. 1st to May 1st. This LAW goes into effect on NOV.1st 2009.
ALL owners or operators must ensure that EVERYONE on board is wearing a properly fastened USCG approved wearable PFD of an approriate size when the vessel is underway.
again, law goes into effect NOV. 1st 2009

That's the "Scuttlebutt" ! shoot me an e-mail/P.M. if anyone want's to see the announcement from the USCG that I got.

This is because, of reduced boat traffic during the Spring and Fall, and to prevent loss of life due to cold water immersion, and Hypothermia.

Though this makes "good sense", it's just another example of the government infiltrating into every facet of our lives. Too bad common sense has to be replaced with laws.

You said a USCG announcement? I know your post says NY, but is this a Federal thing?

The problem with "good sense" laws is its keeping natural sections from killing off the idiots and they are breeding faster than the non-idiots.

The announcement came to me through USCG Aux., the law was passed by Gov. Patterson on July 11th 2009, I believe it is a NY "STATE" law.

Does this law apply to NYers living in Florida? You know the saying, once a NYer, always a NYer. they don`t adapt well.;)

Hey Binkie,

Why don't all of you New Yorkers that are here in the South go back to New York.
That way you guys won't get confused. We don't want anyone tro fall overboard and drown.

Solution, everyone buy a 22' Whaler...

I bet there is going to be a run on 22' boats being bought in the NY area.

Great time to invest in inflatable life vests. Where one State goes others will follow.

Open an online inflatable vest store for NY'ers and maximize on the uncool factor with a license to print NY Yankee etc logos.

Someone's going to make a mint.

I might have poo-poo'ed this if I had not already read this DHS report on boating fatalities this spring.

The charts and breakdowns are a bit numbing. Page 5 summarizes the salient points. The bar chart on time of year is very illuminating.

It is truly surprising how long the human body can survive in cold water if large amounts of energy are not being expended trying to keep afloat. New York has made a wise choice in amending its Navigation Law to include PFD use. The critics will advance all the same 'personal choice' arguments used by the opponents of motorcycle helmets, but the statistics will show a decline in cold water fatalities.

Load pipes save lives helmets don't. lol

My gf makes me put a life jacket on the dog. Guess I'll start wearing one too.
I was just checked for wearable life jackets yesteday. It will be a lot easier for them to check now.
