I have an 82 Montauk 17 with the original evinrude 140 hp. I want to put a '95 honda 4-stroke 50 HP on it. What kind of speed can i expect out of this motor on this boat? I am not a speed demon, but do like the on demand power the 140 hp gave me when needed. Otherwise it is a dangerous, gas guzzler that is hard to troll with. Anyone have experience with a 50hp on this boat?

I've used this calculation: You want to be at "ABOUT" 75% to 85% of the Max. H.P. Rating of the hull. The "W/C" info. on that yr. hull is 100 h.p max.. This would make anything in the 75-85 h.p range "ABOUT" right. That's why a standard package for that hull is often a 90 hp. This is a "Balanced" set up that will accomplish 3 main thing's.
1) Good Fuel Economy
2) Wt. (not sure about 4 stroke wt.)
3) Enough "extra ponies" on "Tap" in case you have to get the Hell out of the way of something quickly !

I was out with a friend of mine that had a 60 on his 17' Montauk and he was extremely unhappy with the all around performance. I would imagine a 50 would be even worse. I think you will regret it in the long run......Have you checked to see if you will have to replace the existing controls?

I keep an '87 Montauk with an '08 Honda BF50 4-stroke on Boston Harbor. Tops out at about 27kt (30mph). I cruise at about 20kt at 5K rpm. When it's flat, or when I'm heavily loaded, I do wish I had a little more power - but it's not flat all that often in the waters I sail - so as a practical matter (most of the time) the 50 pushes me just as fast as a 90 would. The stern floats with the motorwell drains about an inch above the waterline which is nice when fishing in swell in the outer harbor. Fuel efficiency is great (averaging under 1.5 gph).

That said, yesterday, I saw an ad in Points East for a new-fangled Honda 60. Not sure of the weight, but if I had to do it all over again, that would be worth serious consideration.
